Christoph Gawlik

What's the deal with him? I could swear he was touted as a possible 1st rounder a couple of years ago before he was injured (tore up his shoulder, right?), then he seemed to drop off the NHL scouting radar completely.

Now I know that injuries are a tricky deal, but it would appear that he had a solid 05-06 (23 pts in 48 games for Berlin. Not bad considering they were the DEL champs). You would think that some team would take a chance on him in the last draft, but no. If I'm not mistaken, should he slip through the next draft, he becomes an NHL UFA.

Here's hoping he has a solid WJC for the Germans (argh, gonna get up at 6am to watch Germany vs USA tomorow. Hate losing sleep, but want to watch this game.)

Oh yeah, and his last name is pronounced "GAHV-lick", right?

Also, in a somewhat related thought, it's kinda sad that Germany's return to the top tier happens without the man largely responsible for getting them there: Thomas Greiss. I barely got to see him play in North Dakota, and it would've been sweet to have one last shot with the big boys. I'm also sure that San Jose/Worcester/Fresno would've released him to compete were he still eligible.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to bed so I can be coherent when I watch the game.

I did expect him to become atleast a late round pick in recent years and cause the talent is still there - even with that history of injuries.
It´s a bit weird to see a Korbinian Holzer getting picked and a Gawlik getting passed over and over.
Right now i´m not sure if a NHL team will give him a chance as a UFA, since they´ve already made the decision to let him pass numerous times (but there´s still a bit of hope).
Dunno how public it is or how it is taken into consideration from NHL teams, but according to various DEL managers and coaches plus one DEB member, the Gawliks (father + son) aren´t easy to handle and pressing for lots of icetime (and/or money?) otherwise they´re going to chance teams.

He's looked solid so far vs the US. On a line with two NHL draftees (Buffalo prospects Philip Gogulla & Felix Schutz) Gawlik seems to have been at the center of several German scoring chances. He did whistle a couple of good chances wide of the net though.

Gawlik was ok, thought both Gogulla and Shutz played better though.

I thought Gogulla was the best German on the ice.

That doesn't help his chances to get drafted.

And it´s the shoulder he already had surgery on earlier in his (short) career.

Good. Then Buffalo can sign him as a FA.

Update on Gawlik

Realize this is a bit of an out-dated thread, but is there any new information on him? Heard Pierre Page speaking about him a couple of seasons ago and he thought he was a strong young player.

Any plans for him heading to North America or is he staying in the DEL?

Gawlik didn't play since last December because of an injury.
This season he will play for the Frankfurt Lions (if he doesn't get hurt again... ).
