Another deal with Phx?

Shane Doan would fit very nicely.

SAN JOSE - The NHL lifted its holiday roster freeze on Wednesday, and according to multiple sources the Coyotes have been getting inquiries from other teams about impending unrestricted free agents Ladislav Nagy, Mike Comrie and Shane Doan.

Aebischer's a UFA after this year, doubt Phoenix would give up too much for him (though it would give them first chance to resign him).

As for our scoring prospects, I'd hate to see any of the two Kostitsyns, Grabovski or Aubin traded.

Bleh. I would pass on Comrie. He's just a very very very slight/minor step up from, say, Mike Ribeiro... if at all.

Not that this is what I'm basing it on AT ALL, but take their TSN profiles for example:
Assets: Has exceptional vision and creativity on the ice. His offensive instincts are off the charts and he's improving his all-around game.
Flaws: Still needs a lot of work in the defensive zone. Must bulk up, for he is quite undersized by NHL standards. Is still a bit immature.
Career potential: Second line center.

Assets: Is a deceptively quick player, with above-average hockey sense and an aggressive nature. Plays the game at top speed, yet is still able to make excellent heads-up passes. Can score goals in bunches.
Flaws: Doesn't have ideal NHL size. Must put his Edmonton ordeal behind him. Needs to work on his play without the puck.
Career potential: Second line center.

Now I 'd love to add Shane Doan to this team, and I'd even gamble on Nagy, but the only way we add a scoring winger is by trading Ryder or Samsonov. Otherwise, we have NO ROOM on the team, at all. We can afford to add a player at C, and nowhere else, without giving up an asset of the same position.

I don't see how Doan or Nagy would fit on the team, since they're wingers. I could see Samsonov going for one of them maybe..

I wouldn't take Comrie either, he's not the type of player we need. We need an experienced C who knows how to dish the puck very well. Like Robert Lang.

Maybe it's just me, but I think we could find room for a 20-30 goal scoring winger like Doan. How many of those do we have?

As for Comrie, the TSN profile states "Plays the game at top speed, yet is still able to make excellent heads-up passes."

Why would we trade Samsonov for guys who are UFA end of this year?

Not that I'm *necessarily* in favour of doing it, but the idea would be to free up his $3.5M in cap space for next season, and to open up a top 6 roster spot for a guy like Latendresse, Kostitsyn, or Perezhogin.

I agree Doan would be a great asset. I'd take him over Ryder for example. But he's a more expensive option.

As for Comrie, he'd be an upgrade over Plekanec, but I don't see him as someone who could work with our two russians for some reason.. And he isn't very experienced. IMO the team needs more vets who have been around and know what it takes to win.

Doan hasn't been the same player since the new NHL rule changes. I would welcome him but not trilled about it. Comrie has not played well this season. The most I would give up for him is either a mid level prospect like Milroy or Abs.

i don't really care for any of these guys but if i had to choose one it'd be Doan. good character player and very gritty too.

This team is good enuff to make a run at the cup this year .

you make a deal or two before the deadline to put them in optimal position to go all the way .

Montreal has to go for it this season

I have always loved Shane Doan... but... unfortunately we're not a team that is very well positioned to pay the top dollar to take a chance on a guy rediscovering himself. His reputation isn't so shot that he won't still get big bucks this summer. But it can't be from us, we just won't have the cap room to take that gamble. And so, I would also not be the one to pay a premium to get him as a deadline rental either, knowing that in all likelihood he would just be going somewhere else as a UFA in the summer. Alas.

And how do you plan on fitting that into the cap? All of those guys make at least $3M.

Agreed. I'm a big Doan fan and would love to see him in Habs uniform...Phoenix will ask for the moon and he doesn't play centre or defense either. Pass.

Wrong! Doan has played center before and he does all the little things. This year has been ruff for him, he missed 10 games with a sore back and this is the extent of his injuries for his whole career. Doan started slow last year too, and then went on a tear for the second half and finished with a 30 goal season. I don't think he wiil be dealt, he is the face of the coyotes and Gretzky likes him alot. Nagy,Comrie,Morris will go before him.

Don't listen. The Yotes don't want Aebisher or any other soon to be UFA's.
