I'll add that if Fleury, a player who is earning his first millions, can take a significant paycut, then multimillionaire owner Lemieux should dig even deeper with his.

This really goes a long way in showing Fleury's character. It looks like that Pens not only drafted a highly talented player, but also a good person.

Kudos to MAF.

Now if only we can start getting the Players Association to think the along the same lines, we can avoid a lockout and or strike.

Fleury and Mario are the only players making anything of significance. You think the Drake is going to cut his salary from 450k to 300k?

I would be shocked if Fleury ends up deferring, or even cutting out, some of his bonuses. Let alone anyone else.

That would be GREAT if he did defer some of his money to help out his team and stay in the NHL. Would he defer money or just give it up?

Or use it to take some ownership like Mario did?

In any case, Morozov is the only one besides Mario that's even close to that, making something like $1.5 M in base salary. WIth a payroll below $22 M, there isn't much cutting the other players can do to help without serious percentage cuts to their salary.

And I believe the players offered to take a 10% pay cut across the board in one of the CBA negotiations, but the owners stuck to their "hard cap" guns and rejected it.

As they should've. What's ten percent compared to what teams are currently losing?

You hit it on the head...if this thread does get busy, it will be because of a spark due to a negative comment made by someone mistaking this for one of the eight or so negative pens threads started in the past few weeks....

As for the article, kudos to Fleury if he does wind up going through with this...it seems like he really wants to stay with Pens....obviously this is speculated and may never actually happen, but these are the type of articles I was hoping to hear concerning Kovy about a year back.....very classy gesture...

Of course, I mean look at what Lemieux's pay cut sparked?

Or were you not able to read that since it fell off the front page in a matter of minutes?
