What about all the other incidents involving him and his use of his stick? I don't like when a player don't learn moreso when an incident like the Koivu one was near career ending....

That's not it.
He's an arrogant *****. As he often does, he'll be right in the middle of the crease, pushing the goalie, and then he'll get mad because a defencement is jumping on him. Much like Ryan Smyth, but Smyth usually avoids, or at least tries to avoid the goaltender, unlike Williams. I'm sure there is 14 goalies in the Eastern Conference who would like to give him the Dwayne Roloson/Rick Nash special...
As much as I hate Williams, I hate the Sabres more. It's not like there's a huge size difference. Both are 190, Williams is 6'1" and Max is 6'0". Max gave him an elbow/facewash after the whistle and Williams turned around and fought him like a man. Got the better of him too until Afinogenov threw him off balance.
This is as opposed to Daniel Briere's revenge strategy: Castrate your opponent when the ref isn't looking then turn your back on a fight.

Even if it is carelessness,(which I don't believe for a second) this guy is going to end someones career with his high sticking stupidity. Even my 8 year old knows better then to use his stick that way! Why didn't he try to take on Peters last night??
