Just what the Leafs need - another pylon on the back-end who takes dumb penalties.

Are they trying to clone Wade Belak or something? That would be a bad move by the Leafs...

If the Leafs want to slow down their defense even more that's fine with me. I wouldn't mind seeing Havlat skate around Cairns on every shift in the playoffs like he did last year.

Shouldn't the Leafs be more concerned with getting a defenseman who can move the puck?

The Leafs should be more concerned with getting (in this order):

1.) a #1 or #2 defenseman
2.) an additional top four d-man who is defensively oriented

...this would go a long way to strengthening the current group we have and thus pushing all our current players down a notch in the defensive pairings

Player X-Kaberle
McCabe-Pilar
Klee-Berg

OR

Kaberle-McCabe
Player X-Pilar
Klee-Berg

That leaves the Marchments, Jackmans, and Belaks OFF the ice.

I'd much rather go after Hamrlik.

Cairns isn't really the kind of defenseman this team needs.

This is just stupid.

Eric Cairns is the diametrical opposite of what type of defenceman the Leafs need right now.

Perhaps Shayne Corson has been prowling the ACC and MLSE needs a new security guard to offer a beating. But I can't see it as an on-ice "addition" when they already have Belak doing the same sort of job.

Well, beggars can't be choosers.

Cairns would give the Leafs some sorely-needed depth. Hamrlik would cost a pretty penny; Cairns won't, and it's the move the Leafs should make now.

cairns pilar would be a good 3rd pairing
but if they land a quality D it does push the likes of Berg down to the 3rd pair creating a log jam
unless of course one of the above is involved in the deal for the quality D.
hopefully not Pilar

i know this: quinn really wants a fighter on his blueline

Yeah, beggers......I'm sure Mike Milbury is going to enjoy hearing "Hmmm.....Cairns is pretty good, but it would be better if it was Hamrlik instead *nudge nudge wink wink*"

And Toronto isn't exactly in a position to acquire a number-one defenseman. Who are they going to give up to get one? Sundin? Mogilny? Joe Niewendyk? Puh-lease. The price for a #1 defenseman would either cost them talent they can't afford to give up (or just can't, in the case of some of these players and their contracts), or would have too big of contract themselves to be interested in.

Everyone seems to want a #1 defenceman these days - and I'm sure other teams could offer up a better package at this stage in the game. I admit, Cairns isn't much, but anything to help out their porous defense.

Isles pushing a Cairns trade with the Leafs instead of Hamrlik, supports the rumors coming out of the Calgary and Chicago press, that the isles don't want to trade any of their top 4 defensemen.

NY press had Cairns on the list of players who the nyi would look to move.

Weimer,Parrish,Timmander,Cairns-that's $6m in salary.

If Scatchard goes, that'd be another $1.4m.

Right, and so the return the Isles would expect if Hamrlik was to go to the leafs would be solid prospects that aren't making any $. I think Steen would be a nice starting point, and I'd also imagine the Isles would want another prospect or high pick.

Fortunately for the nyi fans, Wang's attempt to buy the NJ Netsmeans he has to keep attendance up to show the NBA that Li I fans will support the Nets.

Very unlikely the isles are dealing Hamrlik to the Leafs for 2 so-so prospects.

So what are you saying - Cairns for two prospects? It sure fits into the Toronto mold of wheelin' and dealin'!

FWIW, Cairns just took Peat down pretty handily.

Exactly. Which is why the Leafs should go after Cairns to address their depth deficiency - he's cheaper and more affordable than Hamrlik.

Like I said, big boy - beggars can't be choosers, and TO does not have the means right now to acquire Hamrlik without giving anything significant up. Deal with it. Isles and Leafs are not good dance partners.

BTW, the trade involved cash-strapped Pittsburgh, centering around an overpaid Martin Straka. What did you expect? If any team is rebuilding right now, it's Pittsburgh.

The Leafs can afford Hamrlik... trust me.

But you're not getting Steen in return for a 30 year old defenseman... Alexander Steen's a star in the Swedish Elite League at the age of 19 and would have come over to Canada if Vastra Frolunda (his team) would have given him more then 2 days to train with Toronto at camp.

John Ferguson Jr. actually made an attempt to sign him to an NHL contract.

Steen's untouchable... more so then Robert Nilsson who's been an absolute bust so far this season over in Sweden.

Me too... even if the only reason is to intimidate opponents, I'd much rather have Mush because he's got a bad reputation... players are scared of him.
