Best/Worst team names in hockey?

Along the same lines of the worst logos thread, are there any names that you love, or just rub you the wrong way?

Best
- St. Louis Blues (I love my blues man)
- Brampton Battalion
- Calgary Hitmen
- Red Deer Rebels
- Baie-Comeau Drakkar (not sure what it means, but it sounds cool)
- St. John's Fog Devils (homer pick, but I do think the name is neat)
- Hartford Wolf Pack
- Of course, all the original 6. Just classic.

Worst
- Columbus Blue Jackets
- Anaheim Ducks (Though, not nearly as bad as the Mighty Ducks)
- Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (don't have a problem with the Penguins, but Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as the city? )
- Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights (***? is Ak-Sar-Ben a type of knight? Or a city or something?)
- Peterborough Petes (There has to be more to this than just the beginning of the city name, right? Help me out here fans)
- Brandon Wheat Kings
- Lewiston Maineiacs (Good lord, how tacky)

Wow. You're right. That makes that name cooler.

Anyone know the story behind that? Spelling it backwards and putting dashes in it is something I'd only think up if I was drunk out of my mind.

I wish the NHL had the names from the AHL.

Why the CBJ?

References to my countries and states history does not make for a bad name.

Hartford is called the wolf pack because alot of Submarines are manufactured in and around Hartford, a group of submarines is refered to as a wolf pack and the actually name of the submarines manufactured there are called Sea Wolves

They're actually named after a pre-existing group who are part owners of the team, so it's not that odd.

Ak-Bars-Kazan in Russia probably gets the nod for coolest name in hockey. Sounds so wicked awesome to say it. You know you want to.

I know about the references and stuff, but its still just an irritating name.

No good reason or anything, just don't like it.

A (or the) Drakkar is the (kind of) ship the Vikes sailed when they came to North America, led by Leif Eriksson. Of course, the Vikes previously sailed them in Europe, but that would be pointless for an NA team...Just like you have the Clippers in the NBA, although I ain't sure if it's because of the ship.

The name sounds very nice (Drakkar got something really aggressive when pronouncing it in french, and it gotta be the same in english), but it's somewhat irrelevent : the Vikings never came(or at least, aren't rumored) in Baie-Comeau or Quebec "mainland" for that matter, although they probably stepped on the Newfoundland - New England voyage.

As I said, phonetically, it's great, but "history" wise, not much sense in this ( Just trying to picture... The Orlando Galleons? The New Jersey Frigates?). But the drakkars had fierce, aggressive warriors on their decks, so the relation might be there.

A+ for originality. That's for sure.

You're right. They should call the next NHL team the "Mobile Robert E. Lee's".

Best: New Jersey Devils

Worst: Toronto Maple Leafs

I am basing my pick of the Maple Leafs on name only, just because something is old doesn't make the name suck less.

So True!
But I just don't think that's the idea behind the name...

Medicine Hat Tigers. For some reason, always sticks in my head. Medicine hat as a city/town name is hilarious.

I'm not a big fan of names that don't have both a singular and a plural form... like the Avalanche or the Lightning.

I won't pick a "best", as there are so many good team names.

Worst? The St. Louis Blues.
