Magnitogorsk Metallurg is one of the coolest. Also like the Rimouski Oceanic. Worst is the Val-d'Or Foreurs (first of all, what ****ing indian language is "Val-d'Or"?)

On topic, my favorite team name has always been the Penguins because I love penguins (the animal) so much.

I actually misread his post. I thought it said I don't know why they use sabres on the logo and I flashed back to their good jerseys

-Senators- absolutely, without a doubt, the worst name for a sports team EVER (not including baseball names).

-Maple Leafs- who names a pro team after a leaf?
-Wild- who names a sports team after an adverb?
-Blue Jacket- ok so they're named after an army division. Raise your hand if you've ever heard of an army division called the "blue jackets". Now the 3 people that have, raise your hand if you can tell me how it relates to hockey?

Don't mind but could improve
-Canucks- just don't like it. I know I'm in minority.
-Oilers- lame name, but understandable why it was named so. Kinda like Steelers.
-Red Wing- what is a red wing?
-Flyer- What is a flyer? And why did they copy the red wing's logo?
-Rangers
-Penguins- not intimidating, doesn't fit a sports team, imo. (pens fan here)

Someone mentioned the "Canucks" as a bad team name. To be consistent, they would have to categorize "Yankees" in the same brush. The Canucks are a descent name. That they have never (in their NHL incarnation) tied the logo to anything to do with Johnny Canuck is a travesty.

Anyways, how's this for a team name: The Nippon Paper Cranes of the Asian Hockey League
Team logo: (note - former NHLer Derek Plante is currently playing for that team).

Wild is also a noun, as in "We live in the wild of the jungle."

The Union soldiers were called blue jackets, it wasn't just an army division. Also, Mr. Mac(owner of the team) wanted part of the name to have the word blue in it. The arena was built on a union graveyard or something similar, so they named it after the union soldiers. It has nothing to do with hockey. How do ANY names have to do with hockey? They don't have to. But I'm sure you'd like all the teams to be called the pucks or sticks, right?

Congrats on the most ingnorant post in the thread.

Val-d'or is French for Valley of Gold. It is a gold mining town.

I don't like corny names either, like the Thrashers.

Then again, I wouldn't want to give a professional team a name that I would give to a peewee team, like River Rats.

the name is bad enough, but what i really hate about the Thrashers is the logo. take the hockey stick out of it and it's fine, but animals/mascots holding hockey sticks make for the worst logos in all of hockey (that includes Pittsburgh, the striped penguin was much better)

A Thrasher is actually a bird, i feel this makes the name a little better.

Good names,

Nordiques (a damn cool word which mean northmen or northerners)
Bruins
Blackhawks
Redwings
Oilers
Whalers (what an awesome name!)

Bad names,

Ducks,
Stars,
Avalanche,
Predators,
Wild,
Hurricanes,
Maple Leafs

London Knights should be added to the best list. Love their logo as well.

Best - Medicine Hat Tigers - Great organization in the WHL. Great history.
- Regina Pats - Shortened from the Patricia's, Part of Canada's army.
- Edmonton Oilers

Worst - Calgary Hitmen - Bad name, bad logo, though, the pink jerseys made me laugh
- Greenville Grrrowl - Too bad they're defunct.
- Kootney Ice - What the heck is an Ice?
- Carolina Hurricanes - Way to name ourselves after a natural disaster.

Some (many?) members of the native community consider "Sioux" a racist term.

How about Lizard Kings? Hockey seems to have this thing for teams with "King" in the name. Also the logo is god awful.

I believe the Victoria team name (Salmon Kings) is a play on the term "King Salmon" which is an American expression for what we refer to as Spring or Chinook Salmon.

My favourite has to be the Jacksonville Lizard Kings of the ECHL and their second logo. As far as bad the Lubbock Cotton Kings logo makes the Salmon Kings look brilliant by comparison and the Renfrew Creamery Kings?????

The NCAA has tried to crackdown on native names like ND Fighting Sioux or Florida State Seminoles but always fail when the Tribes come out and say that they aren't offended by the names, surprisingly or not, the NCAA does not care about offending the Irish.

When a second New York team was granted a NHL franchise (the New York Americans were first), the MSG President was given the franchise. His name was G.I. "Tex" Rickard. Jokingly sportswriters began to refer to the future team as "Tex's Rangers" and the sobriquet stuck.

There have been a lot of hockey teams nicknamed the "Flyers" going back to the 1928 St. Louis Flyers of the AHA.
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/findteam.php3

There was the 1952 Fife (Scotland) Flyers of the British National League.

Best team names:
Avalanche, Bruins, Flyers, Hurricanes, Lightning, Panthers, Predators, Sharks, Thrashers, Wild

Worst team names:
Blue Jackets, Canadiens, Capitals, Islanders, Maple Leafs, Ducks, Oilers, Penquins, Senators

Teams with names that don't seem to fit:
Rangers... seems like it should be a team out west. (good for a team in Portland)
Sabres... If they're only going to have a slug-buffalo on the logo, then what's the point of calling the team Sabres. More it's a problem with the logo than with the name.
