Torres isn't getting dealt for a defenseman who can't play defense.

Actually, Mara has pretty much played nothing but defense this whole year, as his 11 points would suggest. He's been solid defensively playing with Brad Stuart, and maybe a trade would wake the points up. I of course have a somewhat biased view, but I think it's fair.

From what I saw of him in Phoenix, I was never once impressed with his defensive ability.

I haven't watched many Boston games this year, but I have a hard time believing that he'd suddenly be a guy who could play with Jason Smith on the top pairing and hold his head above water.

Looking at his team worst -11 doesn't exactly instill a lot of confidence either, especially if he's spent most of his time with Brad Stuart and managing to just get destroyed when he's not with him.

I hope you Boston fans realize that Brad Stuart will be asking near 5-6 million dollars in the off-season. I don't see a plausible way for you guys to keep him, nor a sensible reason to keep him unless you guys are going to make a post-season run. Would he be available in a deadline deal along with Marco Sturm for, say, Tjarnqvist and Torres?

I doubt that Torres will get moved.....at least I hope not....he has been a great player for the last two years and helped drive us to the finals last year. Look for one of the youngsters or draft picks to be moved.

I wouldn't mind Mara, as he can actually make a pass. But not for Torres.

Nope. Every team in the league wants Torres. INCLUDING Edmonton.

No.

Back to Topic: I've always been a Mara and Morris fan. Edmonton should be taking a run at both! Mara has been playing zero PP, and he's on the second unit for the PK. I have been very impressed with his play in Boston's end, but he is not a PKer. He looks lost, out of place and completely misused.
Dave Lewis has not used him at The Point on the PP at all. Everyone was telling me in July that this guy was a great quarterback for the PP... Where they all wrong? Or is Lewis wrong? I've seen very few Yotes games, and he seemed to do alright there on the PP.

As far as Morris or Boynton... I have no idea what it would cost to get either (both?) of these guys. Yotes fans seem to being willing to send them packing for a 2nd or 3rd rounder. Again, I don't know a whole lot about Morris, but I have always been a big fan of Boynton. He's always come off as a team player, and a good lockeroom guy. People in Boston have been saying the same thing about this guy from day one (and it REALLY showed last year), Slap the "C" on his jersey, or send him packing.
He was the only Bruin last year that showed a pulse (not named Stuart, Berg, Boyes or Sturm) after the Thornton trade. But I don't know if this guy is what Edmonton needs. He is a stay-at-home guy. He can rush, and he showed that in Boston when he was paired with Hal Gill, but he was really at his best when paired with Gonchar in late 2004.

Just some food for thought, I can't believe Edmonton is willing to part with the package that it would take to land Brad Stuart. If I was KLow, I would be looking at The Yotes.

Make a note to never Mention Belak and the Oilers in the same breath again.

Mara is a HHOFer compared to Belak

And I don't know who you think Torres is, but he's not untradable.

Yup....current talk around town is right in that ballpark. 5 million per for 4 years.

Bruins and his agent, Pat Brisson,. have begun talks

My guess is that the Bruins re-sign him by end of the month or if a deal can't be reached he'll be sent to the highest bidder at the dealine.

Would JF Jacques, *insert mid-level prospect* and 2nd/3rd for Mara, Tenkrat

Or

Torres, Tjarqvist, 2nd, 4th for Stuart and Donavan

Maybe. I'd do it, not sure if P.C. would do it though. Boston would trading away their #4 D-Man, and Tenkrat, who has played on the 1st, 3rd and 4th line. I'm not sure if P.C. would be willing to trade two roster players for 2 non-roster players (Unless you're counting on Jacques to play in Boston) and a pick.

If Stuart is being treated as a 'rental' player, then yea, that works. But the papers here are saying P.C. and Stuart's agent are talking. Boston wants to sign him, but if they can't they still might keep him and let him walk at the end of the year.

.
Well Jacques is a roster player here, even with the injured players returning. I didn't know that Tenkrat was doing so much for the team.

How about, Jacques & 2nd for Mara.

This seems semi-sorta plausible though I don't value Mara as high as I probably should. I just can't stomach a defencemen who doesn't ever hit (which is what I've read Boston fans post about Mara).

Say what??? I like Stuart but he'd be a rental. Donovan was a UFA last year. How many years did he sign for in Boston? I thought it was only one, maybe two years, then he's a UFA again. I'm guessing Stuart will go for a 2nd and a body unless he signs before the trade deadline.

I'm not going to say anything about fair exchange because I'm probably horrible at that. But let's analyze Mara for a little bit here...

This year:
34 GP / 12 pts / -11

That plus/minus doesn't look all that great and I think it's the worst on the team as a dman. But it's not as if he's getting sheltered out there as he probably draws the second toughest matchup. (In the last Toronto matchup Alberts and Chara took Sundin)

The guy has 9 ppp in 96:53 of PPTOI this year, though. That's a rate of 5.7 PPP/hr. That's not too shabby all things considered and it would eclipse every single one of our dmen by a mile I'd imagine. However, that sample size probably isn't the largest.

If we take last season into account: 29 PPP in 438:38 of PPTOI. That is a rate of 3.97 PPP/hr. That's a little lower but I'd say that would be an improvement over most of our defense.

All in all, he'd be an improvement on the pp for the Oilers... but I'd worry about his plus/minus rating based upon the quick snapshot I took of him during the TOR/BOS matchup. Anyone willing to dig a little deeper?
