Rumour: "The other shoe will drop by Friday."

Sorry Mods, this might not be a good enough source, but my buddy was able to get into a conversation with one of the Edmonton media guys, and they talked about the Nedved deal. The "media guy" (he wouldn't give me his/her name), told him that the other shoe will drop by Friday.

Now, I don't know if that was speculation, or news from the inside, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

They discussed San Jose, Phoenix, New Jersey and Ottawa, as teams KLO was in conversation with.

Anyone wanna speculate? we all know, KLO has a thing for doing transactions in two's?

edit: wow, it wasnt until the 3rd person referenced my misspelling of shoe, that I clued in, lol.

AHHHHH not the dropping show!!! Sorry MOz, had to bud

Interesting if true. And at least worthy of a discussion as who potential targets from those teams could be. One would assume a D-man is in order.

San Jose, Phoenix, New Jersey and Ottawa

SJ
Ehrhoff or Carle*? lol, fantasy time? Or has Vlasic made one of them expendable?

Phoenix
Michalek or Ballard* is who I would hope for. And please not Morris!

NJ
Rafalski or Martin I would have to think are the most likely.

Ottawa
any of Corvo, Preissing, or Meszaros* would rule. Unless we go huge and do a Redden/Horcoff swap... Maybe that is why Nedved was brought in? Little cap hit to make room for Wade's huge salary?

* these are my, "hope like hell but never gonna happen" choices.

Well, seeing as how Lowe "won't compromise the future of this team", I'd suspect:

SAN JOSE:
One of:
Mclaren
Hannan

PHOENIX:
One of:
Boynton
Michalek
-Nagy, Doan maybe?

NEW JERSEY:
One of:
Martin
Matvichuk (for cheap)
-Rafalski is too expensive for us, both to trade for and to pay

OTTAWA:
One of:
Redden (deal would include Horcoff, doubt it happens though)
Phillips
Volchenkov

These are players that we could get without giving up too many future players and stretching our budget

Some other guys from Ottawa that might be in the Oilers sights could be Corvo and Preissing.

I'm pretty sure the Oilers don't want to move any of their regular defensemen other than Tjarnqvist. I think they want to deal young forwards and picks for veteran d-men.

And I doubt the Coyotes would move Michalek.

San Jose is a new one though, it was interesting to hear that Carle and Bernier were sent down. Lupul going back to Cali would make alot of sense; I wonder what a Lupul/Smith combo could get us from San Jose?

The more I think about it, Horc for Redden makes a lot of sense.

Give Ottawa the C help they need, and they get 3M in cap space back for future tweaks before the deadline.

We get the top pairing PP QB we are missing and keep the young core together.

Smyth - Nedved - Hemsky
Torres - Stoll - Pisani
Sykora - Reasoner - Lupul
MAP/Peterson/JFJ/Winch

Redden - Smith
Staios - Bergeron
Greene - Smid
Tjarnqvist

Roli
Jussi

As long as Nedved can put up some points with Smyth and Hemsky, it could work. Or can we even afford to lose Horc's PK skills with Moreau out of the lineup? Maybe Brodziak gets the callup?

I'd try to dig Hannan and Bell out from San Jose. Apparently both are in the "doghouse" at the moment and it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a physical forward like Bell on the roster (I think he's physical ).

Well, now I'll have something to disappoint me on Friday when a deal doesn't go down...

If a trade were to go down, a defenceman is obviously what Lowe would be targetting.

San Jose: Ehrhoff, Carle or Hannan
I just can't see why San Jose would trade any of these guys. Granted they just dropped Carle down to the minors but I'm guessing the Sharks will be looking to add another solid defenceman rather than trade one away.

Phoenix: Morris, Michalek or Boynton
Morris is far too expensive for what he provides and I can't see Phoenix trading Michalek who is their number one defenceman, young and locked up long-term for cheap (possibly the best non-rookie contract bargain in the NHL). Boynton is a guy who could make some sense, he's not an offensive guy but he's definitely a big upgrade on Tjarnqvist and Lowe was rumored to be interested in him earlier in the year. I'd love to see Lowe swing a deal for Boynton (the fact that he's still fairly young is appealing) assuming another deal would be made for a puck-mover as well.

New Jersey: Matvichuk, Martin or Rafalski
I can't see a playoff contender in the Devils trading Rafalski so he's probably out of the picture. Martin could certainly make some sense but he is playing the most minutes of any defenceman in New Jersey so I can't see why they'd be looking to move him regardless of his disappointing offensive numbers. Matvichuk is a guy who could make some sense for depth and I'd definitely have no problem with acquiring him if we can find a taker for Tjarnqvist.

Ottawa: Corvo or Preissing
I personally want nothing to do with Corvo, I'm not a fan at all of his absolutely horrific defensive zone coverage (although he's apparently been a bit better in Ottawa this year). Preissing is a guy who would make a world of sense, he's extremely cheap, capable of running a powerplay and he's definitely Ottawa's number 6 defenceman (playing 5 less minutes than the next closest guy in Volchenkov). Considering the fact that he's not getting a ton of powerplay time, he's actually putting up some pretty good numbers.

Overall, I'd be extremely happy if we could somehow emerge with Preissing and Boynton. Both guys are stuck on teams with solid defensive depth and I think they're both capable of playing more minutes. Ditch Tjarnqvist, add those two and I think we're looking okay:

Smith-Preissing
Staios-Smid
Boynton-Greene

I really like the thought of adding Boynton as I think he could potentially replace Smith by the next season (when Smith will be in the last year of his contract). I'm not exactly sure what the price for Preissing would be but I'd be willing to move a decent amount if we could get his name on a contract extension (and obviously less if it looks like he'll be rental).

Get me Boynton anyday ahead of Tjärnqvist, but why would we want Preissing on our top pair? Could he handle going from #6 to #1 just like that? I'm not entirely sold on that, but as I said I definitely agree with adding Boynton. Replacing Tjärnqvist with him would improve the look of our D corps on the physical side greatly.

Ya, maybe we'll read something in the papers tommorow, but I dont know who this media guy is, or if he is in a position to go public with this. I guess we'll find out eventually.

ALSO, Michalek in Phoenix is a pipe dream. In todays cap world, we would probably be better off going after Chara or Jovonovski. (I might be exxagerating.)

Yeah..

Trading for one glaring hole by creating another glaring hole won't solve anything.

I still stand by my

Nedved, Jacques, 2nd for Phillips

But I do believe that Kevin Lowe has something in the works.

The Phillips deal makes sense too, because why else would you keep JF in the line up unless other teams wanted to scout him.
