Mike Ribeiro - fakeing to get injured
Derek Roy - diving non stop
Tim Thomas - the way he plays, his extreme luck
Staal family - ugly, overrated, etc.

old ladies seem to love Ryan Smyth's hair. I think he's attracting the wrong kind of attention.

The HF mentality is sad indeed, if a player gets too much fans, someone has to start a hate bandwaggon.

Kovalchuk for spitting in that guys face and Chelios and Ribeiro because they remind me of each other. Derian Hatcher gets an honourable mention for knocking Lombardi (or Leopold?) out of the playoffs with an elbow in dying minutes of game 7. You should get 40 games for a doing that.

Hey there. Well, first off, I didn't say last year. I didn't mention a year, but perhaps I should have. I'm talking about this year, and the 7-4 win on the day of/after the snowstorm.

It may or may not have come after his goal (or assists), and I wasn't trying to insuinate that it was worse because he did it in a blowout or when the game was out of hand. That's just how I saw the game, as a blowout - rangers actually led 2-0 halfway through the first, but then sabres scored 5 quick goals and outscored the rangers 7-1 in the final two and a half periods until straka potted a goal at 18:32 of the third. The point is that he did it and it ticked me off Don't worry, he's merely one of many on the most hated list.

I have to say that I'm genuinely surprised by the amount of hate for Briere in this thread. I'm not surprised that some people don't like him, but I never would have imagined he'd be the most hated player in the entire NHL! I think his diving/whining reputation is WAY overblown. Anyone who watches the Sabres regularly knows that. I respect the hell out of him because he is so small but isn't afraid to stand his ground in front of the net or along the boards. Plays with a big chip on his shoulder (like most of the Sabres). I also love that Phoenix completely gave up on the guy and traded him for Chris Gratton! Oh well, to each his/her own.

Here's my list:

Erik Cole (cheap shot artist and whiner -- very bad combo)
Roenick (dude should shut up once in a while)
Hatcher (although I'm starting to feel sorry for him)

I sort of hate Tucker, but I also love the type of game he plays. He's like a better Barnaby (who I always loved). He's crossed the line a few too many times, though.

As for the checking of Briere, I seriously doubt it was intentional and I'm sure that Ovechkin was happy to see Briere NOT getting injured by it. Still, the actual check was unnessessary, but still far from a being a cheapshot. Briere's spearing incident however was pure cheapshot with no excuses, especially when he did it as a retaliation. This also seems to be the opinion of many others as well, judging by the comments on this thread about Briere...
Never said it was intentional, and I never defended the Briere spear, but intentional or not, Ovechkin's actions could have had very, very disasterous results for Briere, whereas Briere's spear did exactly what it was intented to do (and all it could have done), give AO a little discomfort.

Probably something about his going away speech after being cut from the Canadian World Junior team.

I wouldn't be so sure of his intentions on that, though the main thing is that neither one of them got injured. Intentional spearings like that just shouldn't happen. To me that was the key thing in it. Despite of that, I'm not amongst the Briere haters, though I'm not exactly a fan either. Had he dropped the gloves and fought Ovechkin for it, I'd have respected him a lot more. Though it's not like he loses sleep over some nobody like me not respecting his decision heh
