Would be nice to have 2 hard hitting russians back there. If we're lucky we could get a Konstantinov Jr! If we're semi lucky, they'll be like Kasparaitis. If we're not lucky at all they'll be like Ulanov.

Well, we'll see him tomorrow! One way or another a Habs prospect will leave Sweden with gold and another will leave with silver!

I'll take just getting them over here at some point. Frankly I am concerned that we may never see either of these guys but I have nothing to base that off and reading Simon's interview, I get the feeling that maybe he would want to come over.

Emelin we have to get over here, we are thin on quaility LD prospects, but it does seem like things could get really ugle between the NHL-IIHF and the Russian Federation. It concerns me that if something isn't worked out between the parties (the current contract expires this summer) then it may make things difficult to get players over here. I don't see Gainey letting players that are under contract with a Russian club, break that contract to play for us. But I am only guessing here.

Then again that doesn't mean that Gainey won't be able to come to terms with one or both Russian clubs by offering them something both sides feel is fair, although they could try and get them for nothing if they wait till their contracts expire like what happened with Grabovski.

It will be interesting to see what happens, would be great to see both come over. I had hoped Korneev would at least come to camp, but I never really expected him to do so. Right now I'm just happy guys like Markov, Perezhogin, Grabovski, Kostitsyn's, all chose to make the jump, hopefully Emelin and Valentenko will join that group.

Maybe one of them would be interested in Samsonov?

Looks like a keeper, we'll see today if he's ready to make the jump to N.A hockey.

Valentenko is well aware of the Canadiens hockey tradition. He is very proud having been drafted by this team. "I heard a lot about the Canadiens, they won several Stanley Cups," he said.
This made me smile

Well if Russia doesn't sign the new NHL-IIHF deal (assuming a new deal gets worked out this summer) then I would guess that Bettman would extend the time frame for signing Russians like he did this past summer, unless that was a one time thing. If so then Valentenko would only be 21 during the '08-'09 season.

Is his contract through '08-'09 or ends after the '07-'08 season like Emelin's contract? Since he has to be signed by the summer of '08, it would be good timing if so. As long as we get Emelin I'll be happy, but if we can't get him over here, it will suck cause Fischer is likely several years away before even hitting the AHL so we need to develop more D prospects now.

Brutal high stick from Valentenko on Helm leads to Canada's third goal. Despite that though, he looks like a big, mean defender! Interesting prospect.

Looks like we'll have to use the ol' Penguins discount to get them out anytime soon.

Pavel took a very bad penalty after the whistle and Canada made it 3-0 on the PP. Top corner by Toews he's amazing.

What do Alexi Emelin and Pavel Valentenko have in common? Both have goals against Canada in the gold medal game!

Valentenko shoots well and has been hitting hard all game... I'm impressed with him after two periods. Our scouts are awesome!

Yep! Valentenko is a steal!

Carey Price though, woah! Tournament MVP & Tornie All-star! I think he was named Canada's playe of the game too, not 100% sure.

Taows was player of the game for Canada.

And Valentenko was the most noticeble player for Russia. He was quite good...a few bad plays, but overall, he look like a player who could reach the NHL in a couple of years. Playing in the RSL will most likely help him a lot!

And as for Price, wow! He won everything...

I liked what I saw from him. Still a little rough around the edges, but he's not afraid to get his nose dirty and he definetly looks like he could eventually make it at the NHL level. He was Russia's most noticable dman in the final and although he made a few bad plays, he looked pretty solid overall.

I don't know what the situation is with him coming over, but I think in a couple years he could be a solid addition to the team.

Didn't like Valentenko's play at all during the first period (what was up with him throwing the puck off the boards directly to the Russian goal slot?) but he was great in the last two. He seems like a guy who loves to shoot the puck and can really dictate a powerplay. Good stuff!
