Atlanta Thrashers sniper Ilya Kovalchuk leads East in all-star balloting
December 2 @ 19:46, EST
NEW YORK (CP) - Atlanta Thrashers sniper Ilya Kovalchuk leads the Eastern Conference with 41,820 votes in early balloting for the NHL all-star game.
New Jersey Devils dominate the voting for the Eastern Conference's defensive end. Martin Brodeur leads all goaltenders with 40,487 while Scott Stevens (31,806 votes) and Scott Niedermayer (29,547) are the top-two blue-liners. Boston Bruins star Joe Thornton leads all centres with 20,868 votes while Ottawa Senators sniper Marian Hossa, with 21,731, is second to Kovalchuk among wingers.
Voting continues through Dec. 31. The Minnesota Wild will host the all-star Feb. 8 at the Xcel Energy Center.
Kovalchuk: 41,820 votes Brodeur: 40,487 votes Stevens: 31,806 votes S. Niedermayer: 29,547 votes Hossa: 21,731 votes Thornton: 20,868 votes
kinda suprised Scott Niedermayer got so many more votes than Thorton
Keep in mind that people vote for 2 defensemen and only one center. Anyone who considers Neids the best *or* the second-best defenseman in the east will cause his vote tally to go up. Anyone who thinks Thornton is secondbest in the east (I'd suspect behind Lemieux most frequently) wouldn't help Thornton''s vote any.
That is the full rankings, Stevens and Niedermayer with large leads.
Interesting. If Toronto fans weren't splitting their center vote between Sundin and Nieuwendyk, Sundin would be superclose to Thornton. There are 8689 people who have voted for Nieuwendyk as best center in the east. That's *bizarre*.
