Ak Long Shift Story

When I was watching the NJ game on Sunday It was the first time I heard of apparently the 7 minute shift Keenan forced on Alex when he was a young NY Ranger as a lesson becauase he kept playing his shifts long.

Would have loved to see that one - but man how the gifted seperate themselves from the ordinary - he scored around the 4 minute mark of that marathon shift.

Well, he's proved his worth imo to us and it will be interesting from now to the trade deadline if any moves will be made by Bob.

We keep talking about a 2nd line Center that is needed, however, is it so out of the oridinary to go after a top winger and convert him mid season to a center position?

Thought I'd throw that out.

Apparently, he didn't understand it was a punishment.

Yeah, this story has been known for many years but I never knew that kovalev actually scored during that punishment.

Eventually, kovy got pissed off and went to score a goal...... but these days, instead of getting pissed off and producing, kovy is getting pissed off and taking bad penalties.

I remember Kovalev told this story at TV. He was young and liked to play a lot. In 2nd period, he missed a shift, he tried to return and Keenan said him go and play, he played, he tried to return once again, Keenan said go and play.. He scored a goal and tried to return but Keenan said to play. He played till intermission, he said in his interview his legs were like spaghetti and he just wanted to stay in dress room and didn't want to play in 3rd period at all, but he went to ice and Keenan said him once again go and play.. He played few minutes and finally returned to the box and didn't play till the end of the game.

Keenan has ruined many young careers, but this is a good lesson for a guy like Kovalev.

Agreed ten fold - seems like teams just don't get it with this guy.

Here's the pattern.

Mike gets fired.

Mike gets hired (TSN) or whatever other media outlet.

Mike gets Hired again as coach sometime during his media venture (which to him is a fill-in only)

and on and on . . . .

This guy must really lay it on in a job interview!

Keenan gets hired w/ another 5 yr deal.

Keenan gets fired 1 yr in.

Keenan gets hired w/ 3 yr deal (teams are learning).

Keenan gets fired 1 yr in.

No, all he says is that he's been to the finals 3x and won the cup once.

Great coach, only for certain teams, however...but a terrible GM that doesn't believe in goaltenders.

Edit: Oh, and this 'idiot' is also 5th all time for wins behind guys like Bowman and Arbour.

You're right - At what cost though - there are coaches that are succesfull on paper only and I would think he fits in this category.

I may be wrong but I don't believe he has to much respect out there from those who played for him. I may be deffinately wrong in that statement, however, I just do not recall a player standing up for Keenan every time he left a team whether it be his choice or someone elses.

Bowman was tough, but look what he did with the Habs and Wings and just to hear what Stevie Y said about Bowman on his number retirement ceremony speaks volumes that the guy was tough, but at the end was a smart hockey man. Heck he could have succeded Sam Pollock as GM but obviously it went to Grundmund (unfortunately) and Scotty ended up leaving because he didn't get the GM job. (I believe that is what happened - if my memory is correct)

Have you guys heard the story of last season after one of the practices at the Centre Bell, Kovalev was by himself on the ice and thought he was alone in the rink. He brought out one mini-stick and went to the blue line and started shooting pucks at the net, hitting the crossbar 5-6 times in a row and a few times randomly after.

There was one reporter from the Journal de Montreal about 20 rows up who came down amazed and asked Kovalev where he had learned to do that and Kovalev told him he was actually trying to put the puck on top of the net and to please keep the story out of the papers.

I don't think its that he doesn't believe in goalenders ala "Captain Hook" just ask Kovalev. He's hard on all the players who don't do exactly what he tells them to. It's just a lot more obvious with tenders then bench players. He loves goalies from what I understand, but things like Luongo, where he actually offered more money then Luongo got from Vancouver, make it seem like that. He's just an a$$hole and certain people don't respond well to his hard hand approach.

He traded Cujo for Shane Corson. Ask the St. Louis board how they felt about that. I may be wrong, but I remember Joseph was traded as the 'future consideration' Edmonton asked for...I also believe it was after his spectacular playoff series against the Leafs.

But the fact remains he got the job done in New York as a coach.

That's hilarious, never heard that one before.

Keenan may be an idiot but I thought that was a great way to punish a player that keeps extending his shifts. Probably more effective than benching him too.

Keenan is garbage, he cant hold down a job anymore if his life depended on it. Never thought or will think he was a good GM, a coach, or even a host on TSN.

he has studed the careers of many players for acts like these.

His stats, bank account and trophy case dictate otherwise.

Someone, forget who, did a quick study of his teams, and how quickly he'd normally turn a team around. Thing is, he'd make one move too many, or get a bit restless before the job was finished.

I think he's probably one of the better hockey minds but not one of the better temperments.
