Greene with Gilbert and Staios didn't skate.

Either Staios is:

a) nursing an injury (not a good sign)

b) part of a trade package (unlikely given that he just signed the extension)

c) resting or some other reason (unless its a serious personal issue, its unlikely with another rookie coming in to the lineup and already short-staffed)

This would be a huge hurdle to overcome...lets hope he was just feeling a little under the weather and will be okay to go by game time.
Otherwise...it looks as if the Oilers will face San Jose's offence with a defence consisting of Smith, Hejda, Greene, Gilbert, MAB and Roy.

Oh well it is not like we are playing 2 of the best offensive centerman in the league or anything.

Lets found out if he is actually missing tonight's game and the prognosis before we jump to conclusions.

Maybe Staios has some spicy curries last night I hope to god he is not hurt, but then again, it would give the Oilers the opportunity to dress all the possible defensemen for the this year and the next, and see which one strives under the pressures, and which ones collapse.

There was a piece on the national news last night about how the flu went through the Habs dressingroom and just flattened a bunch of guys. I know that Reasoner was down with the flu right before the LA game - they took his roomie (Hemsky I think) out of his room for that trip. I wonder if the flu or something like it is taking its toll on the Oil... shades of round 2 from last years playoffs...

Tuesday night at Rexall Place, the Oilers toughest opponent looked like it might be a nasty flu bug making its way through the locker room.
Ironic, that, given all the Oilers have been through — lost teeth, fearless shot blocks, overcoming a 2-0 deficit in Round 2 against the San Jose Sharks. On and on.
But, to hear Anaheim Mighty Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle tell it, this flu bug affair was perhaps a tactical thing. When the flu bug business was put to Carlyle during his morning news conference, he seemed a tad suspicious.
“Well, I don’t know if you can believe that it’s the flu bug,” Carlyle said. “Maybe it’s that they’re injured.

"We gotta win the game Thursday and get the horses to the barn and get a little rest," MacTavish said of his club, some of whom are battling the flu.

When Raffi Torres was sidelined with the flu for Game 2, MacTavish had several options, including earlier playoff hero Brad Winchester, Alberta native Kyle Brodziak and Ontario junior scoring champion Robbie Schremp.

While Torres remained out of the lineup, defenceman Marc-Andre Bergeron returned after missing Game 2 with the flu.

Nothing would make me happier than seeing an NHL GM give us a #1 D-man AND take Staios and his 4-year death sentence to the Oiler's salary cap.

Not going to happen, unfortunately.

Yeah, because it's not like Staios was signed for market value or anything

There is a bright side people. If we stay out of the box, we may be okay.

San Jose is 24th in the league at 5 on 5 GF, with only 63. Philly is in front of them.

That, and I think Toskala still has nightmares

ah i just had memories of last spring come rushing back.... the team was *ravaged* by the flu and still managed to beat the ducks ..... i was 95% sure they were going to lose a couple games because of that flu bug, but they didnt (and i must admit a bunch of people on hf tried talking me into believing that they would win those games, but i didnt listen, as i often dont ).... good times, good times

Some days you make OntOilFan look like Mr Sunshine.

Staios is a good player and he is only slightly above what I would like to see for a contract. And for what DMen have been commanding he got around fair market value on the guy

I really hope Staios was resting and he is good to go for the game. Otherwise I don't know what will happen with the Oilers

The chances of us staying out of the penalty box? Minimal. Their puck cycle down low and the construct of our D will dictate that. If only our forwards could hold the puck for any extended period of time we probably wouldnt get crucified by their powerplay tonight. But they wont, and we will.

unless Roli steals one, and hemmer/smyth/stoll/sykora go 3 for 5 on the powerplay.

The market has really gone up on D-men this past year so I might be crazy but I think it is fair market value for Staios.

Also looking forward to hearing how Gilbert plays as game is PPV and I'll be listening I guess.

Maybe we'll get a Festivus miracle 3 weeks late?

Hedja-Smith
Greene-MAB
Roy-Gilbert

they may as well mail the 2 points in and rest up for the back-to-back against the NW division

Considering I just started posting here weeks ago, it'd be nice to see you not passing judgement on my *opinions* just yet...

I am a huge Staios doubter and for me it's not 'what have you done for me lately'.. Staios is playing above his level right now and is feeding off the responsibility. There's no question he's been our best defenceman this year. Mark my words though, when Staios starts making disasterous mistakes again - everyone here will be *****ing about the contract.

Did you watch the finals??

EDIT - I'm outraged at the term of the contract along with the salary, not just the price. If it were a one or even 2 year deal, fine. He is not worth that much money over 4 years, and if by the end of the contract he is - I will eat my jersey.

Does anybody else think PHX has an inside track to the final playoff spot?

With the NW fighting it out between themselves, there is a good shot PHX can outpoint two or more NW division teams.
