We can keep going back and forth all we want here.

Why? In baseball fans respect that classic players were as good or better than modern players. But hockey fans seem incapable of this. Why is that?

Why? Even if you don't want to do the research, just acknowledge that you don't have enough information to compair Crosby with Lalonde.

Sidney Crosby is more than just special, he is great. Don't be suprised by the time Sidney Crosby reaches the age of 24-26, he just might surpass Gretzky's 200+ point season.

But, don't be suprised if he doesn't either.

Simply not possible. More skill, possible. More determination does not exist.

215 points wouldn't even be possible for Gretzky in his prime if you time warped him to the present and put him on the Sabres....Just to point out goalies can actually stop pucks now......

Ah, the "stacked team" myth. I never get tired of that one.

In Gretzky's first year in the league (1980), the Oilers were the 6th worst team in the league, with 61 points in the standings. Their top players with Blair McDonald and Stan Weir. Messier and Lowe were on the team, but they were rookies (and not very good ones). Blair McDonald scored 94 points playing next to Gretzky; three years later, still in his prime age, McDonald was out of the NHL and couldn't even score a point per game in the AHL. Gretzky might have had something to do with McDonald's success. Also, as a rookie, Gretzky won the Hart. I believe he was the first player to do that since Nels Stewart in 1926.

In Gretzky's second year (1981), the Oilers were the 8th worst team in the league, with 74 points in the standings. Kurri joined the team, but was nothing more than an average second-liner at that point. Gretzky, in his second year in the league, set the all-time NHL record for assists (109) and points (164). He also scored 55 goals. Kurri was way, way back with 32 goals and 75 points. During the playoffs, Gretzky scored 21 points in 9 games. Kurri was again way behind him, with 12 points. Gretzky won the Art Ross (obviously) and won the Hart trophy for the second year in a row.

The Oilers legitimately contended for the Cup for the first time in 1983, when Trottier and the Islanders defeated them in a thrilling Cup final. Gretzky had won his 3rd straight Art Ross and 4th straight Hart trophy. He had 196 points; the next best teammate had 106. During the playoffs, Gretzky scored 38 points in 16 games! Kurri was way behind, with 23 points.

It's true that Gretzky put up monstrous numbers on a stacked team. However, Gretzky proved in many seasons that he could win the Hart and Art Ross with lousy teammates.

The NHL averaged around 7.5 goals per game for the first decade of decade of Gretzky's career, not nine.

Finally: if Gretzky only benefited from a high-scoring era and good teammates, why, as an injured 37-year-old playing on a lousy Rangers team in the middle of the "dead puck era", did he finish 3rd in the league in scoring? He was just 12 points behind Jagr (the Art Ross winner), who was in his prime. He was 1 point back of Forsberg (on a great team in his prime) and tied Bure (in his prime). Thus, he outscored all of the rest of the NHL's talent including Selanne, Sakic, Francis, Sundin, Palfy, Leclair, Bondra, etc.

One last point: I really do like Crosby. It would be to the benefit of myself, the NHL, and all the fans to see him succeed. In fact, I hope he challenges some of Gretzky's records. However, it's dissapointing that the NHL has done such a poor job (especially compared to the MBA and NBA) about educating its fans about past greats. It saddens me to see that some fans think that being pro-Crosby means you need to be anti-Gretzky. Why not enjoy (and respect) both?

You make a good point Hockey Outsider

But to keep this going Gretzky started in NHL career 6 months older then crosby
Crosby led the NHL in scoring in the calender year of 2006. Which would make up the age.

BUT Sid may regularily put up 160 points...and I think he's gonna have that Mark Messier type longevity....outside of injury his drive will be greater then that of Sakic or Yzerman with greater skill as well...he'll get the most out himself for the longest time possible and that may not mean 200 four times or even once...but it may mean 150+ in 10 or more seasons(possibly starting this year)...which is crazy

gnarly dude!
