OT - Le Spectrum to be shut down

Quote:
A Montreal entertainment landmark that has hosted superstars such as U2, The Police and Peter Gabriel is on its last legs.
The Spectrum club on Ste. Catherine street will be demolished to make way for an office tower.
Relocation plans fell through
The developer says negotiations to relocate the Spectrum to another part of the lot fell through.
If the city gives the go-ahead, the Spectrum and several businesses next door will be demolished by summertime.

This sucks. Le Spectrum is, hands down, my favourite concert venue. The sound is way better than at Club Soda, and the atmosphere is way better than the overly big Metropolis. Most concerts I see are at Le Spectrum, it seems. I hope something happens and the place stays open.

Be careful Montreal. Here in Vancouver we have lost one great venue after another in recent years - all to ****ing condos or office towers. The latest victim is Richards on Richards (a beautiful venue with a wooden circular balcony overlooking the stage and similar in style to the commodore and the town pump [also gone] in some ways).

I just have great memories of Le Spectrum. Seeing my favourite band, the Get Up Kids, there twice. The band is no more, and soon the venue will meet the same fate.

I didn't really see many concerts at the Spectrum (one or two at most) but as a music fan in general it always sucks when something like this happens...like L'X a few years ago, El Salon last year, etc.

L'X was such a dump, but I really liked the one show I saw there. Old school feel to it.

Yeah that was part (or all) of its charm. There isn't really a trashy hardcore/punk dive venue around like that anymore, is there?

actually cafe campus is worst...

metropolis is not bad...just gets too packed i find...

anyhoo if i'm not mistaken there still a few active businesses there no? like Looneys? no?
And accross the street theres a huge *** building that musique plus uses for storage so why not tear that down?

why not tear down the buildings near atwater metro. they're so desolate with the exception of Bombay palace

Typical Montreal Bureaucracy.

Oh boy, the Medley sucks. Maybe it's because I always end up seeing shows there in the summer where it's really humid... but the place has absolutely no ventilation. You leave there soaked even if you just stand in the back watching.

What do they need an office tower for. There's no economy.

But there's no shows either...lol

c'est la vie

well, that's so-called 'progress'...

(history): First christened the Cinéma Alouette, then Le Club Montréal, it was acquired by Équipe Spectra in 1982. It is one of Québec's rare concert halls to have attained mythic status...

A veritable institution on the Québec concert scene for the past 20 years, the Spectrum has shone its spots on a parade of great musical talents from here and from elsewhere, from Céline Dion to The Police, joining bright company such as Tina Turner, Miles Davis and Nina Hagen, without forgetting Renaud, the Smashing Pumpkins, Les Rita Mitsouko or Peter Gabriel. Reputed as THE top venue for Québec's singers and rock musicians, over the years it has become a "home" for the likes of Piché, Rivard, Bélanger, Jalbert, Desjardins or Séguin, not to mention Leloup, Marjo or Lapointe. Besides musical performances, a number of television shows have been recorded there, including Rock et Belles Oreilles, Samedi de rire, The Police in Concert, Le show du Refuge and, more recently, Studio TV-5. To create a television studio, the central orchestra area and its lighting grid can readily be put to use.

A compelling number of multidisciplinary creations have also been staged there, including that of Édouard Lock and his dance troupe, the La La La Human Steps. This spring the music group, The Musical Box, which recreates the legendary concerts of Genesis, will once again take to the stage… for the 50th time!

Just for the hell of it, here's a picture a buddy of mine took before we went to see a concert.

Notice one think:

Medley + Spectrum = Old
Club Soda + Metropolis = Newer and/or Updated.

Personally, always found Club Soda + Medley were the best for smaller shows. Metropolis has a barricade, that's lame.

If I'm not mistaken so does Spectrum. If I remember correctly though, Medly + Spectrum are old and ghetto ***, that's why they don't do shows nemore at either.

Come to think of it though, I think medley is back up and running again now. For a while they stopped doing shows there tho (maybe a year).
