Proposal: Ales Kotalik for Gary Roberts

Local media in Buffalo is kicking this idea around this afternoon. Kotalik is on the first year of a three-year deal at a cap hit of $2.33M.

Curious to hear your opinions.

Well, Gary's 40, in the last year of his contract, and their scoring is equal. We give up great veteran leadership, but gain a much younger guy.

Sounds good to me.

As a Sabres fan I have to ask, are all these positive comments because Kotalik is more then a decade younger or has Roberts not been playing all that well?

Before we strap Roberts to the roof of the car and drop him off in Buffalo, remember that Kotalik is one of the few Sabres with a negative +/-. I worry about his defensive game. Do we really need another player with Kolnik-type scoring ability? Is he worth $2.3M. I'll pass.

Not that I need to make the sell to you guys, but Kotalik is on our checking line. We don't match up lines all that much but when we do he's out there facing the top lines.

I think we can get more for Roberts closer to the deadline. I'd personally rather get some picks/prospects than another mid level scoring forward. Those aren't hard to find...especially for $2.3M.

Would I take a 28 year old winger on pace for 52 points for a 40 year old on pace for 50 with on and off injuries? I'd most likely say "sure" even if the Panthers are in the playoff hunt in the next month or two, however that veteran experience that Roberts brings may be extremely useful if he stays healthy and the Panthers make the playoffs. It's a rather risky decision for now if you ask me, but this could really pay off in the future if Kotalik develops into a top line player like experts say he may.

Given a choice of "take this trade or keep Roberts", I'll take this trade. I'd rather go the "trade Roberts for something else" route.

Yah Kotalik is 28. He's not going to get any better.

Roberts has been playing really well actually. He is a little slow (granted, he's 40 years old), but he was playing on our top line and doing a good job at it.

Very good point since he's basically in his prime now. It would be much easier for me to answer "yes" or "no" to this question in a month from now when I knew where the team stood standings wise. I guess it just depends if they'd be buyers or sellers.

it's not that roberts has been playing poorly - he hasn't. i love roberts....but put yourself in our shoes. we're in 14th place and we're talking about a 40 year old second line winger on his last legs vs. a 28 year old, who while is "struggling" this year, is still outscoring gary. he's signed for two more years at a pretty affordable rate.....why not?

it makes sense for the sabres though i think too. you guys save the cap room long term (which isn't an issue at all for us) to help re-sign some guys and add a playoff savvy veteran. roberts is exactly what you want in the postseason...the problem for us for the last decade has been getting there. we have alot of playoff performers (belfour, gelinas, roberts....nieuwendyk before he retired)....we just couldn't get there....

If it's near the deadline and we're out of the playoff race, then yes I'd make the deal, but not right now.

One thing about Kotalik, he's got a cannon of a slapshot. He might look really nice with Jokinen and Horton. He's also a right handed shot who plays left wing, which I like.

Doesn't Roberts have a NTC himself as part of his deal? I seem to remember reading that he'd waive it only if he would be signed to an additional yr...something that a team like the Sabres probably would balk at (unless Roberts cuts his salary in half for next yr).

I'd rather take Kotalik at 2.3 than a 5th round pick. I like Roberts alot but it's not like we need him anymore. We aint making the playoffs so give Roberts one more chance at the cup than rather let him walk after the season.

Kotalik has the best shot on the Buffalo team, if he can package it together a little better and stay a little more consistent, he'll be dynamite.... this trade would be an absolute steal for the Panthers, I think it'd have to be Kotalik for Roberts + conditional 2nd or 3rd or 4th.
