GDT: Predators @ Red Wings 1-17-07

*Surging Predators visit red-hot Red Wings in divisional clash*
---------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville (32-11-3)at Detroit (29-12-5) 7:30 pm EST

DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Nashville Predators played second fiddle
to the Detroit Red Wings in the Central Division last season.
But Jason Arnott has the Predators in line to finish on top this
time around.

The Predators shoot for their seventh straight win and look to
inch closer to a franchise record when they visit the Red Wings
on Wednesday.

Nashville recorded a club-record 106 points last season only to
finish a whopping 18 points behind first-place Detroit.

But thanks to their recent stellar play, the Predators enter
Wednesday's contest with a four-point cushion over the Red Wings
in the Central Division and trail Anaheim (68 points) by only
one for the league's top mark.

Acquired as a free agent this past offseason, Arnott has been
outstanding of late, scoring six goals and nine points in his
last seven games.

Arnott netted his 16th tally of the season Monday to help the
Predators rally for a 5-3 victory over the Calgary Flames.

David Legwand had a goal and two assists for Nashville, which
has outscored its opponents by a 27-13 margin during the
six-game winning streak.

Nashville is on its longest winning streak since opening last
season with a franchise-record eight straight victories.

If the Predators want to move closer to that mark, they will
have to do so against an equally hot Red Wings club which has
won four straight, including a 2-0 triumph over Montreal on
Monday.

Dominik Hasek stopped 23 shots in the contest to record his
sixth shutout this season and 74th career while Pavel Datsyuk
scored his 13th goal of the campaign.

After getting off to a slow start this season, Datsyuk has been
outstanding of late, registering 10 goals and 17 assists over
his last 20 contests. The Russian center has three tallies and
seven assists over his current four-game points streak.

No pressure, just one of the more important games in our history. Not for the fact that if we lose that our season is over, but for the fact that it grows our lead on Detroit, shows that we can beat good teams and you know, that thing called best team in the NHL (even if its only for a few games).

I really wish they would start Mason. The Red Wings always outshoot everyone they play it seems... and I'm afraid a couple of softies will do us in. But heres to hoping Vokoun gets fired up and plays out of his mind, he's done it in the Joe before.

Big game but if we lose its not the end of the world. Last year we went up there and swept a back to back.. and we tanked thereafter LOL.. Those were some fun games though It would be nice to #1 in the NHL I'd admit

Go Preds!

I really didn't realise that the Preds were only 1 point back of the league lead. Serves me right, I've been busy pushing the Panic button with the Oilers.

Anyway, GO PREDS.

(I have tickets to an Oilers/Preds game in March. I'll write up another game summery. Though, I warn you, I will be really overlly stimulated.)

Our standings will be a direct result of the head to head series with Detroit. There is just no way that anyone can shrug this off as just another game.

Gotta have the win tonight!

HUGE game. The Wings just lost Schneider for a bit. We need to capitalize on their injuries. In other words, lets kick them while they are down.

We really, REALLY need to score the first goal. Otherwise its going to be a long night trying to climb out of the cellar.

Zetterburg gets a step on the defense off a cross-ice pass and snaps the puck past Vokoun.

1-1 game...personally I thought Vokoun could have played it better.

Hartnell comes down the left side on a 3 v 1 rush, fakes the slapshot to freeze Hasek, and passes it across to Tootoo for the redirection into the open net.

2-1 Preds!

Two keys for this game...as it always is against the Red Wings...
1) We gotta get the puck in deep and avoid turnovers in the neutral zone. Detriot likes to attack with one of their defensemen joining the rush and if we get caught deep or on a NZ turnover we are going to get bitten by the second wave attack off the ensuing 4 v 3.

At the same time, we have to capitialize on the opportunities Detroit gives us by counterattacking with speed through the NZ and creating odd-man rushes. Our first two goals are exactly contributed to this. Both have been odd-man rushes and thankfully we have capitalized on two of them thus far.

2) Gotta stay out of the penalty box. Yes, Detroit is ranked 29th (IIRC) in the league on the PP, but they simply have so much puck-possession time in the zone that they undoubtedly create chances, wear down our PK, and will eventually capitialize. We have to avoid giving away chances like this.

Geez, come on Vokoun! Zetterburg with a weak backhander on a 2 v 2. The puck ski-ramps off Vokoun's stick and into the net.

Thankfully Mason is now in net!

In Mason We Trust!!!

Sully with the deflection of a long wrist shot from Hamhuis backing up over the blueline.

3-2 Preds!!!

All right...apparently it went straight in...Hamhuis with the goal.
