If the consensus is that they wouldn't be the missing piece(s), then no, you would be unwise to move futures for them.

But the question then becomes, what exactly do you think would put this veteran team over the top?

Worth noting that Niedemayer and Thomas, neither star, impact players at this point, were two key acquisitions that played key roles in the Ducks' run to the Finals.

Great point, and neither of those players cost anything of value to acquire.

He's a scout's dream in the way he prepares himself and plays an unselfish game, making smart decisions with the puck. With his bloodlines, he certainly understands what it will take to make it at the next level.

honest question: what puts the leafs into a position where they can call themselves true stanley cup contenders?

I honestly think this team can be a contender with another solid top 4 defeceman, not a centre that would probably play on our 3rd or 4th line, or a defenceman that would most likey take a key player from our current roster to get via trade

McCabe and Kaberle are money together
Klee and Berg are shutting down opponents top lines
Pilar (good enough to play top 4, and is currently playing on our 1st pp unit) and Marchment are a solid bottom pairing. Both of which can land HUGE hits without notice, thats a very underrated part of pilar's play

I don't speak on behalf of the Leafs or their fans, but from an outsider's perspective, one only has to have seen this team over the last several playoff seasons to know they were knocking on the door. Last year, they got knocked out early (in 7), but combine their recent history (playing the Devils very tough, etc.) with the fact that they have a lot of seasoned vets (a plus come April), and it's an obvious conclusion.

you say a top four d-man could do it...and i agree. but won't any solid top 4 d-man take a significant asset away from the leafs? how can you get one without giving up the other? again, just asking honest questions.
