What position/player will Montreal draft ?

Any idea what Montreal will be looking to draft this spring ? They never seem to worry about taking the "best available talent" when their pick comes up. Just curious if there is a type of player or particular position they hope to fill. I know the prospect rankings are all over the board right now, but are there players projected to be available around the time Montreal will pick (14th-20th..guessing) that might make sense for the type of player they are looking for ? Thanks !

I think this year that they don't really need to draft by position in the first round (maybe they would draft a center or D, but goalie and winger is set). I would prefer them to just draft the best player available.

Where as I think that in that range, there isn't a significant difference between many of the prospect projected to get drafted there. I think they'll draft a defenseman if they're given the opportunity.

But not a goalie...

I'd like them to trade down to the end of the 1rst and draft one of Hamil
Aliu
Backlund
Veilleux

I can see this happening if those guys drop down to Montreal's position because they are all capable of being #1 centres (except Aliu is a winger). But if not, I see the Habs taking a defenceman, a safe pick too since they took a project the year before.

Defenseman takes a while to develop and with the way the team is built around defense and goaltending (eventually Price).

I would like the Habs to stockpile the dman.
But I have my complete confidence in Trevor Timmins so if at our spot he see some talent at center that he considers a steal. Go for it, we can use some of that blueship centerman

Habs will pick somewhere from 12th-25th I'd say, hopefully 30th, and I guess if you were going to play the odds, a defenseman would be the best bet, given that there seems to be a large number of them available at that end of the draft and it's probably the area we're weakest in anyway.

Let's keep that subject in the sticky Draft 2007. There's too many possibilities, too much fun to have with that, that I believe preferable to have all the info in one place.

Thanks for your cooperation....

Having said that, I want a center, they'll draft a d-man, but I'll be cool with that as well.

I hope for veilleux, gillies, or aliu... young gillies can get very mean... aliu if he'd put fourth a consistent effort... a big centre... who could pan out... could be a year to take a risk

That thread should be moved to the Philadelphia board. after all, they're the ones who will be drafting with our first pick while we are on a parade with Forsberg and the cup!

Center. Why? Cause we seem to be missing a 1st line center potential prospect.

Wasn't he playing at center at the prospect game (I remember him taking a faceoff vs Esposito)

You have to imagine that Aliu will ultimately become a winger as a pro, however. I mean, if his hockey sense and consistency are issues as most will agree, then probably he ultimately is forced to switch, because at least his physicality will be effective on the wings and down low, and his lapses can be more easily hidden. Of course, if he does get his head into the game better down the road, who knows, he'd be great staying at centre. But early odds probably aren't favouring that.

montreal will likely pick in the bottom 20... i'd guess about 22 - 23. as to who they will pick, it'll likely (again) be best player available though that's very much up to interpretation...

i was fascinated by timmins's comment that they picked price because they thought that he was the last player available who had the potential to become a 'franchise' player. this, to me, means that even though there were other players who had better immediate potential (gilbert brulé) or who would fit their short-timeline needs (a defenseman or center), their definition of bpa was that long-term & big dividends/adequate returns line.

so, with all of that said, I'd suggest any of the following centers - Veilleux, Sutter (from THE Sutter clan?) or McCrae.

Yeah, except Gillies cant even score in the juniors, which makes you think he is gonna be able to in the NHL?
