Lundmark out 8 weeks with knee injury

Canadian Press

12/5/2003

NEW YORK (AP-CP) - Rangers forward Jamie Lundmark will be out eight weeks due to two sprained ligaments in his right knee.

An MRI taken Friday showed that the 22-year-old centre has a Grade 3 sprain of his medial collateral ligament and a partial sprain of the posterior cruciate ligament. The injuries won't require surgery.

"It's stiff, but I knew it was going to be worse today," Lundmark said on Friday. "I can't really move it."

Lundmark was injured Thursday night when New York Islanders captain Michael Peca took him out with a leg to leg check in open ice. The hit was called intentional by Rangers coach and general manager Glen Sather and several other players.

"It is a reaction," Sather said. "You don't need to knee a player to take a guy out. I'm sure he's not thinking he's going to take his knee out when he does it."

Peca contends that there was no intent to injure, and he walked to the Rangers dressing room to apologize to Lundmark after being ejected from the game.

"It's a nice gesture on his part," Sather said. "I can't say that makes what he did right."

Peca was given a major penalty, and the Rangers turned the advantage into two power-play goals that sparked their 4-2 victory.

Lundmark saw a replay of the check, but wouldn't say whether he thought the shot that caused his first big injury was done on purpose. He was surprised when Peca walked down the hallway to see him.

"I wasn't really expecting it. It caught me off guard," Lundmark said.

Lundmark, from Edmonton, was injured while playing his fourth straight game after being a healthy scratch in the previous three. He has two goals and five assists in 23 games this season.

In his rookie season of 2002-03, Lundmark had eight goals and 11 assists in 55 g

Sad. I hope he recovers quickly and is able to come back from this at full strength.

Not to make light of a bad situation but what now is gonna take over as the no. 1 complaint on this board now that we can't complain about Lundmarks lack of icetime?

Shouldnt be a problem. Over the years, this team has never ceased to give us things to complain about.

My guess is Lindros being used as a wing.

With Lundmark and most likely Scott out for a little while, expect Moore or Wiseman to be called up. LaCouture should probably be ready by Sunday, and who knows whats going on with Messier. Even if both play, we'd need a callup to act as a healthy scratch or 4th liner.

By now, I dont really mind Messier being used as a 3rd liner because he's not really taking away ice time from youngsters now that Lundy is injured and Moore is in Hartford. Maybe you can make a case that Ortmeyer gets the shaft, but I dont really have a problem with Orty getting 4th line minutes and being used as a PK specialist. He doesnt have the top line potential of Lundmark, so theres nothing wrong with using him as a utility player. Plus the fact that Messier is playing well (lets admit it) and has created chemistry with Barnaby and Simon. As long as his ice time doesnt exceed that of Holik and Nedved on a nightly basis, I have no problem.
