The 2nd Gretzky Trade

A quick question on the second trade from L.A. to St. Louis. At the time what other teams were chasing Gretz and what were the rumoured packages being offered?

The Rangers, Wings and Canucks were rumored to be interested in Gretzky.

Check this site out for archived articles on the trade and the rumors surrounding Gretzky and the Kings at that time,

Tardif, Vopat, Johnson...what a return for Gretzky. Who did that first-round pick that LA got turn into?

The Rangers offered the Kings left wing Luc Robitaille, defenseman Mattias Norstrom, a first-round draft choice in 1996 and $2 million for Gretzky and veteran right wing Jari Kurri. That deal was left on the negotiating table when Gretzky's agent, Michael Barnett, said $7 million per year, take it or leave it.

The Blues, gave the Kings a list of five young players -- Chris Pronger, Craig Johnson, Patrice Tardif, David Roberts and Denis Chasse. The Kings would have their choice of two or three young guys, along with cash and draft choices.

The Pronger rumors were debunked. Apparently, Keenan never considered trading Pronger. He just threatened to do it to motivate him, and it worked. I somehow doubt the Kings would have turned down Pronger for Gretzky at that time.

And they ended up acquiring Mattias Norstrom weeks later, along with Ray Ferraro, Ian Laperriere and Nathan Lafayette for Kurri, McSorley and Churla. And the funny thing is all of those vets the Rangers acquired left the team the following season as free agents.

Then a summer later, the Kings would end up trading washed up LW Kevin Stevens for Luc Robitaille. But the Rangers would ultimately end up signing Gretzky anyway.

I dont personally knwo the facts back in February of '96 but I know that summer Toronto was in the hunt. It would ave been nice to see Gretzky finish his career there. Even though he had two out of three great years in NY I think that 3rd year by the way they played was a real nail in the coffin for him. I trul believe he would have lasted longer on a better team

Gretzky also said that had the Rangers acquired Bure when he was there, he would have played one more season.

What we're the Blues thinking trading 3 prospects and a first round pick?

What I remember from that season was if The Rangers did Acquire Gretzky you could have just skipped the playoffs and handed us the cup that day, there was no way we would have lost! Gretz would have put us way over the top.

I was so annoyed when not only did we not get the Great one, we wound up trading for Kurri & Macsorley anyway, that trade completely ruined the chemistry of the 95-96 Rangers.

Well Gretzky and Messier were together in '97 and didnt deliver a Cup. NYR still would have lost to Pittsburgh in the 2nd round if they had Gretzky in '96.

It was Steve Stavro who was the then owner. His personal wealth was imploding (Knob Hill Farms) and he was bailing on contracts then and had no interest in Gretzky and his hefty contract demands. Very dumb move by Stavro.

Actually it was a great move by Stavro. He knew that many Gretzky fans would puke blood if he ever wore a Leafs jersey so he opted out.

After reading that article, I've decided that, obviously, if the Sens had taken Zultek instead of that Hossa guy, they would have had 3 Cups in the past decade.
