Kopitar has friend in royal places

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hocke...bitaille_x.htm
Quote:
A healthy bond has developed between the only Los Angeles Kings player to win the Calder Trophy as top NHL rookie and the team's current candidate for the rookie of the year award.

"Luc (Robitaille) is a really good friend of mine," center Anze Kopitar says. "He's treats me like a son. He's been as great as possible to me and he's always there with some story to tell from back in the day."

Nice little article. I thought it was a little funny when it talked about the fans still being around, and just needing this team to win.

No matter what happens, and no matter how much people ***** and moan... we will always be Kings fans. They're like a girlfriend. Sometimes you want to strangle them, but at the end of the day, she's still your <3.

I don't think the quality of these relationships and tutiledge can be understated. This is something the franchise has lacked, imo, for decades. Good for Luc, good for Anze.

Why does DT never seem to get mentioned is this light? Perhaps it's simply Luc's more outgoing personality. I had a hard time accepting it, but I can now certainly see Rob Blake in this role for years as well. No data or anything - just a hunch.

Marcel, arguably the greatest King of all-time, where are you?

Other than 1993 this organization has really never accomplished anything. Yet there are still devoted fans. I don't see how missing the playoffs again is really going to change that. It is not like we have a tradition of winning and are now in a slump. This whole "the Kings better win or they will lose the fans" just puzzles me.

Marcel mentored Luc when Luc came up. Luc lived in Marcel's house his rookie season. Luc is passing on what Marcel gave him.

Agreed. The real fans are the ones sneaking in some messsage board time while at work, paying to see ANY game at Staples this year, still proudly walking down the street in that game worn, authentic jersey (or similarly, the $20 knock off that you signed yourself)... the rest come and go. They come when LA wins, and they go when LA loses.

We will always be fans... it's just unfortunate that we are KINGS fans

Yup.

However, is there a big difference between fans that care far less than they used to but still follow the team, and fans that have left? The number of the former is growing.

Here is an example that may cause you to reconsider whether you would stay devoted. Kopitar leaving aking to how or why Blake left - because he wanted to win the Cup and it wasn't going to happen here.
