Shanahan Not Fined For Comments, but MacTavish Was?

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=194503&hubname=nhl

How is it that Brendan Shanahan is not getting fined for his remarks about the bad officiating in the Rangers-Maple Leafs game, but yet Craig MacTavish was fined $10,000 for his critical remarks after that Oilers-Stars game for McGeough's horrible call? Not that I think Shanahan should be fined for his comments, because IMO he shouldn't, but neither should MacTavish. As much as I hate the Oilers, that's not right.

It's just another example of inconsistency in the NHL. You can fine a coach, but how do you fine a player who was just the captain of the Eastern All-Stars? That just looks bad for the sport.

And he's on the competition committee l think it's called. The one that analyzes ways to improve the game. Shanny's on the inside...but didn't MacT call the ref a retard or make a special olympics crack? You gotta fine him for that ignorance if it was the case.

I'm pretty sure McTavish was fined because he used the word RETARDED.

He said retarded in regards to a call. "It was a retarded call" were his words.

Don't you think there's a bit of a difference when MacT says "He should be suspended" and "...I've found his antics humerous" When Shanny says "It seems they have a different set of rules..."

MacT is blatently making a personal attack on the ref, seems a bit more severe to me

Can't argue that. I honestly think it was because he used the word retarded. He probably would have just gotten a warning of some kind if it he had just said it was a stupid call.

Agreed, retarted is just one of those words you can't use these days without everyone getting upset

Agreed. Defending the lack of respect a player may receive from ref's is one thing. To take a personal shot at a specific ref and not in general then toss out the 'ol retarded word I'm sure are the differences in this scenario.

Yeah, I guess you do make a good point, even though they were both practically saying the same thing, but just different wording.

Shanahan kicked a goal in and it counted, I don't see why he complained
