Best leaders in the NHL?

I have always been a fan of captains and which player the teams decide to put the C and A's on. So let's see who agrees on the players that wear the badge. I'll do a top 20.

And by leader I mean, the face of the team. Someone with experience, someone with a political stroke in the dressing room. Leads by example as well ala Jagr.

1.Joe Sakic
2.Mats Sundin
3.Jaromir Jagr
4.Saku Koivu
5.Niklas Lidstrom
6.Rob Briand 'Amour
7.Scott Niedermeyer
8.Brendan Shannahan
9.Mike Modano (Should have the C)
10.Jarome Iginla
11.Doug Weight (Should have the C)
12.Ryan Smyth
13.Daniel Alfredsson
14.Peter Forsberg
15.Rob Blake
16.Paul Kariya
17.Alexi Yashin
18.Patrick Marleau
19.Joe Thornton
20.Markus Naslund

Basically, all time if I had to choose a captain, I'd either go with Mark Messier or Steve Yzerman. Current, Joe Sakic takes the cake pretty easily, and as you see I left out alot of captains like Chara and Jokinen. But in my opinion if I was running the team, I'd be sure to give the C to someone like Doug Weight and not Dallas Drake.

Naslund isn't even top 20 among Canucks left-wingers.

Dallas Drake is a beauty man, I watched that guy ever since his junior days in Vernon. He may not rack up the points, but he sure leaves his heart out on the ice.

So who should have the C in Vancouver?

Mitchell would have it if he'd been with us longer. Bieksa, Morrison, and Ohlund are all better candidates than Naslund (even though Ohlund has made it known that he would refuse the C), but he's already got the C and it would be stupid to pry it off his jersey.

The only reason I have Naslund on the 20 spot is because he's been Vancouvers captain for as long as I remember. But other then that, I see where your coming from.

Alexei Yashin belongs nowhere on that list. Take it from an NYI fan.

There is a 19 y/o in Pittsburgh who is emerging as a leader, already.

Watch him regularly and it's easy to see that he's about a lot more than shiny personal stats and highlight videos.

And his teammates are feeding off it, falling in line behind him, and growing up together as a squad at a rapid pace.

...And winning.

That's leadership. To be sure, a rarity for anyone that young, and that inexperienced. But this guy is a rarity.

If Vancouver had better players and therefore was a top-5 side of the NHL the last 10 years, noone would have a problem with Näslunds leaderskills.

Vancouver sucks, and no captain in the NHL can change that. It´s the players & coaches that do the job out there, not a "C" on a jersey.

Sakic and Näslund are very similar when it comes to handeling the captaincy, one plays on a side that has been chucked with eliteplayer for a decade, the other has been a side with lousy players, that´s the only difference.

You put Jagr, a guy who didn't even want to be Captain last year ahead of Rod Brind'amour. That's pretty absurd.

Uh oh, Crosby being touted as a leader before he's won in the playoffs. I don't know if even your peerless reputation will carry you through this one unscathed, Trotts.

Agreed. Leadership-wise, Jagr can't touch Rod the Bod.

Iginla,Smyth and Alfredsson should be higher.

Jagr should be much lower.

Get Jagr off there. Shanahan is the only leader on the Rangers.

Jagr has the Rangers in the palm of his hand, he has the STROKE. He's also been one of the best player for the last 14 years.

Even after all these years, I often catch myself calling Rod Brind'Amour ''Rob'', too.

Since when do I care about arrows being slung?

Your point is well taken with regard to winning when it matters. Pens have to get there - even once - before the real test of leadership and delivering in the clutch can be assessed.

That said, I have been nothing less than incredibly impressed with the transformation of the Pens team. Consider how wretched they were last season. Consider how much better a team they are in Feburaury than they were in October.

And, IMO, there is no question as to who is "leading" that rapid evolution, in every sense of the word.

But again, you are correct. Reputations are earned in the second season.

While it is true Jagr runs the Rangers...that does not make him a good leader. Also, him being one of the best players over the past 14 years doesn't make him a good leader. If this list was "Name the top 20 players in the league" then I would agree with you to have him up so high.

You obviously don't know much about the Flames if you have Iginla up so high. No one cares about Iginla here, I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Regehr or Conroy took the C permantely.
