GDT 2/3- Flyers @ Thrashers 7:00 PM

Well, I decided to throw my hat out there and try to see if I could get this team off the snide and turn around our play. I have a lot of things going against me, freaking sell out, but hey I got the chicken to sacrifice right here; had a hard time deciding between original recipie or crispy though.

Thrashers have only won 2 games in regulation since the turn of the year and only 14 pts in 14 games. When asked if he was concerned about his team only being able to get 2 victories in regulation. Ol' soundbite Bob came up with something around the "we don't refuse any points, we're like the Salvation Army, we accept anything." Nice crack.....but not exactly instilling confidence in me though.

I decided against going and doing season stats and instead decided to simply stay with the last 5 games.

Player Stats

Points

Hossa - 2G, 2A
Kovy - 6G, ZERO A
Rucchin - 0 G, 4 A
Havelid - 2G, 1A
Vish - 0 G, 1 A (in 3 games)
Kozlov - 0 G, 5A
Hnidy - 1 G, 0 A
Kapanen - 0 G, 2A
Sim - 2G, 1A
Mellanby - 0 G, 3A
McCarthy - 0 G, 2A
XLB - 0 G, 1A
deVries - 0 G, 2A
Metro - 1G, 0 A
Slater - 1G, 1A

Face Offs:
Holik 51 W and 38 L for a 57% winning percentage
Kapanen 27 W and 21 L for a 56% winning percentage
Rucchin 45 W and 44 L for a 51% winning percentage
Slater 16 W and 13 L for a 55% winning percentage

Hits:
XLB 11
Vish 10 (in 3 games)
Larsen 7
JP VJ 7
Holik 6

Slater 2
Kozlov 2
Metro 2
Mellanby 1
Rucchin 1
Kovy 1
Sim 1
Kapanen 1
JP VJ 1

PP
3 goals in 30 chances for a 10% success rate, but take out the NJ game and we are 0 for 23 in the other games. Our PP is on freak'n life support right now.

PK
3 goals against in 19 chances for an 84% success rate which would be in the Top 10 in the NHL if it was our season percentage

Goalie

Kari is 3-2 with a 3.0 GAA (but has given up 4 in 3 of the last 4 games) and a .904 Save %

I have to say that I hope that Haydar gets a chance to play on Kovy's line and see what he can do on a scoring line. Kovy is in one of his scoring streaks, but with no assists he is not getting others involved in his offensive output. Kari needs to step up a little bit and stop the pucks, I mean we can't expect the offense to score more than 4 goals a night, especially with our PP as horrible as it is right now.

I thought long and hard about this.......but I want to call out HiBob instead of a player tonight. Bob, what has got my Irish up today is your inability to fix the PP. Our PP has 2 of the most dangerous offensive players in the NHL and we now have one of the worst PPs in the league. I don't know if anyone else realized this, but Hossa only has 3 PP goals since the beginning of December. The PP right now is simply pass to Kovy for his slap shot and hope he hits the target. I mean with him it is all or nothing it seems, either he puts it on or he misses the net completely. But with this strategy, our PP has gone down hill. It is time to get Hossa back involved into the PP and get Kovy off of the point and down along a wall where he can stop worrying about being a point man, which he is not and be a shooter again. Taking him off of the point would give us 2 solid units on the PP. Time to fix this Bob, I'm calling you and your coaching abilities out!

Have a good feeling today... 4-1 Thrash, Kovy 2, Hoss 1 + two helpers and Kozzie...

Jeff Carter for Philly...

This game concerns me again.

Philly is in abysmal state this season, but they are really hungry for a win. If any of you people caught the Devils vs. Philly game the other day, Philly played one of their best games, yet, lost devastatingly... giving up a very timely goal with 20 seconds left and then gave up another goal in OT.

Atlanta seems to be always catching this team when they're more desparate than usual. The situation eerily looks the same. Last time they played them, Philly were also on the verge of churning up a winning game, Forsberg was "healthier" and had recently returned to the lineup.

However, its up to Atlanta to bury these guys as they should - but they need to know that Philly is an extremely hungry and angry team. Make the most of their special teams and Atlanta should do alright. Philly also has a slow back line and guys like Kovy, Hossa, Metropolit should be able to get their chances....

Hope all goes welll!

Morning Skate Update - 2/3

According to the MSU, Haydar is being stuck on the 4th line while Sim is moving up to the 1st line and Mellanby is being placed on the Holik/Larsen line:

Ilya Kovalchuk- Steve Rucchin- Jon Sim
Slava Kozlov- Niko Kapanen- Marian Hossa
Brad Larsen- Bobby Holik- Scott Mellanby
Darren Haydar- Jim Slater- Glen Metropolit

Quote:
Kari Lehtonen will start for the Thrashers while Robert Esche is getting the nod for Philly.
Still say Moose should have gotten the start for this one, it's obvious Kari didn't play any better in the second game, and who could forget the first game and the infamous goalie switcheroo in the SO that pretty much blew up in Bob's face. Let Moose finish a game against these guys, hell he at least got us a point the first game - something Kari failed to do with just 1:02 remaining.

Kari didn't fail to do anything. His teammate failed to get the puck out of the zone, when it was about 6 ft from the line. I think it was Metro who overskated the puck or went for the hit or something. Kari did nothing wrong.

Kari does plenty wrong and he could use a day off.

I'm okay with the Metro-Slater-Haydar line as long as they don't get significantly less time than the "Tofu and Potatoes" line. Sim really belongs with Kovalchuk, as much as I liked Metro/Rucchin/Kovy Sim is better with Kovy than Metro is. I'd rather see Metro with Hossa, but that would be a waste of Haydar.

I expect Slater-Metro-Haydar to do very well. Metro should get PP time as well.

If their line gets around 8-10 minutes even strength and comprises the 2nd PP unit, I think it will do some good things tonight. Remember that was the line that scored both of the goals against the Isles on Thursday.

All Metro did was play well when with Rucchin and Kovy, and now he has to play with Slater?

Sim is a mildly talented player with a grinder mentality, I really think he is wasted on a top line.

Oh, what about Vishnevski? Is he in the lineup tonight? It's obvious the team's been missing his physical presence.

Our PK and PP are the exact reasons we've been pretty bad since the new year, they're attrocious and unless we turn them up, we'll be first round knockouts.

Darren Haydar looks great out there, he's creating a lot of chances and could've had a goal himself.

I agree, he's looking really comfortable out there so far (too bad he couldn't settle the puck down and missed the open net, should've had his first goal there).

It's really frustrating seeing Niittymaki getting constantly beat but our guys not being able to find the puck and put it home.

Kovy have to score more if he ever wants to get back into the Richard trophy race. Everyone pads their stats when playing the flyers, so it's not or never.

Let's get a hattrick Kovy, come on!
