Top 4 D-men your team could do without?

specifically top 4.

If you had to cut one of your top 4 loose, for either trade, budget or on ice/off ice performance, which would it be?

Modry. The guy couldnt play defense if his life depended on it.

Isles: Aucoin. He's the oldest one of the bunch and will be an UFA very soon. He also is the least skilled one of the 4.

Wings: Chris Chelios. I wouldn't mind to see him retire, he's clearly not at the level he once was and is a step behind at nearly every play. Still anoying to play against though.

Leafs: We only have 3 top 4 defenseman so I pick Ken Klee simply because he's the most onesided one.

Stars: Teppo Numminen. Over Matvichuk, Klemm, Boucher and Zubov. Numminen needs too much time to adjust in Dallas, and he hasn't showed much.

I'd rank them in this order:

1. Ohlund
2. Jovanovski
3. Salo
4. Allen
5. Sopel
6. Malik
7. Slegr

I hate to cut out Allen.. he's developing nicely.. but I guess it has to be.

edit: i ranked them in importance to the franchise.. I guess you would say that Sopel, Malik, Ohlund and Jovo are the top four since they're the first two pairings. I'd cut Malik from those.

for minny definetly bombardir. he has been horrendous at times this year and i think he's a ufa at the end of the season. but lord knows who we are gonna replace him with, we have absolutly none in houston who's ready taking over. sad but true.

I'd have to disagree with you there. In every Isles game I've watched this year, Aucoin has been the Isles best defenseman.

Chris Chelios for the Wings. He isnt as effective as he once was, but I am not saying he is useless or anything. If he where to retire our top four would still be Lidstrom, Hatcher, Schneider, and Fischer.

Onesided?

He was signed for his defense, yet he's producing like a mad man.

15 points in 24 games or so, he had 17 all of last year.

Tough question. For the aves season, I think i'd cut Morris, but for the aves franchise, prolly skratins would go. Its close though, but I think we could do without Morris' offensive when we get healthy and still go deep in the playoffs, but Skratins defensive abilities would be sorely missed. Not to say that Morris is bad defensively.

Possibly Havelid, although the Ducks are short on puck-moving defensemen, Havelid has been terrible defensively and has also regressed offensively.

Habs top 4:

1. Andrei Markov
2. Sheldon Souray
3. Patrice Brisebois
4. Craig Rivet

The Habs top 4 isn't as clearcut as other clubs, but that's my top 4 (although Rivet hasn't played like a real top 4 for long parts this season). At any rate, Rivet is the one out of those 4 we could most do without...

The Jackets are without three of their top four right now, and let me say it doesn't look pretty out there.

1. Sydor
2. Richardson
3. Spacek
4. Klesla

I'd move Spacek. I think he's the most valueable out of the three (not counting Rusty) in trade due to his rather low salary for the points he could produce. He's been in a funk all season, though, but he could return to his form of last season.

all of our defensemen and expendability.

1.) Jovanovski - we've been down this path before. without Jovo our team blows
2.) Ohlund - see above
3.) Salo - he's quietly solid in both ends, and is an every situation performer. but i guess if necessary Allen could take his spot.
4.) Sopel - he's a key offensive performer and a member of our shutdown pairing. makes the odd defensive gaff but he's young and getting better... but from Allen's rapid developement he'll own this spot on the depth chart by the end of the season. Slegr could fill in some of the offense and makes Sopel IMO our most tradeable top-4.
5.) Allen - rapid developement and a huge part of our future. he could be traded now but this team would be affected by it hard in the very near future. climbed 2 spots on the depth chart already and will be in the #4 spot by the end of the season if not #3.
6.) Malik - could be a top-4 on many teams, and is a great complimentary defensemen to Jovanovski. he has one of the most beautiful outlet passes in the league. however he's struggled this season and if he doesn't return to his last year's form he could be expendable.
7.) Slegr - played exceptional when called upon and added even more offense from the blueline. he could easily be a regular on most defenses in the league, however he's fallen victim to depth. if our defense continues to be relatively healthy he could be expendable, but his desire is to play in Vancouver and he could bolt if traded.

so IMO to answer the question i would say Sopel would be our most tradeable top-4, followed by Salo. Jovo and Ohlund are absolutely untouchable.

Chelios for the Wings......

-Obviously it's not Lidstrom.
-Fischer is the only defenceman who can play a physical brand of hockey.....Even though he doesn't do it consistantly. Plus the youth factor.
-We could do without Schneider aswell, but if were only picking one...
Schneider > Chelios.

THe panthers d is pretty bad and our top 4 is

Bouwmeester
Mezei
VanRyn
Odelein

Krajicek will be our 2 and then Novak will be #3 in a couple years

I'd easily drop Odelein, Lilja or Trnka, although Lilja has been alright.

Bouwmeester
Krajicek
Novak
Mezei
VanRyn

That's a pretty good top 5 and what it will be soon.

I agree with the other Wings fans, and Chelios is definately the one I wouldn't miss too much. He was excelent 2 seasons ago, and now he is just getting too old and all to play his usual game.

Objectively? Jay McKee. Hasn't been his physical self since suffering a consussion a few years back. When he's not hitting, he's an average stay-at-home d-man, probably not top 4 material.

Realistically? Although he is one of the Sabres' most consistent d-men this year, James Patrick is approaching 60 and can't have much left in the tank.

Sean O'Donnell or Hal Gill..... Whichever is in the top 4.

McGillis
Boynton
Jillson
O'Donnell/Gill
Moran

I'd rather cut Gill, but I'm not sure if he'd be top 4 over O'Donnell, so either one.

Really. My choice would be Breezy. Rivet at least has a physical edge that Breezy lacks. Plus Breezy strength is supposedly his offense, but his numbers are not that much more impressive than Rivet's. Breezy is having a better year this year than Rivet, but over the last 4 or 5 years Rivet has been the better player IMO.

Since the Preds supposedly only have 1 top 4 D-Man, I guess it would have to be Timonen. Of course, he's the D-Man we could least afford to lose, as well.

Of our top 4, I think York is the most disposable. He's starting to turn it on, but after missing most of training camp, he's looked awful for most of the season.

With Jackman and MacInnis in the lineup

MacInnis
Pronger
Jackman
Salvador

Salvador would probably the player we could do most without in this group.

As our defense stands currently

Pronger
Salvador
Baron
Finley

Finley could probably go whenever walker gets back. if he gets back.

Why limit it to only one? I can't pick which is the lesser of two evils for the Caps: Doig or Kiwi
