Jack Johnson?

Has he signed with LA? If he hasn't by June, he goes back in the draft, right? Wouldn't be a bad 1st pick if he'll agree to sign.

Jack Johnson is not going anywhere IMO
I think he signs with the Kings as soon as Michigans season is done.

I'm calling him a dousche because of the elbow to Downie, him calling Kessel a dirt-bag in the news, and his tactless comment on Downie. I have no problem with him staying in college.

There's no doubt about it. I just don't think highly of players/coaches who don't have sense enough to keep trash talking on the ice.

let us all pause for a moment and ponder the following:

1) how many 18/19 y/o's have a ton of sense? no offense to anyone that is 18 out there, but you're probably an idiot. i certainly was...

2) are we really going to hold grudges for 18/19 y/o's doing something stupid given 1?

I'm still miffed at how little Rutherford got for Johnson. He gave up on Johnson because Johnson didn't think he was ready to leave college yet. That makes no sense to me.

Add that to the fact that he got ripped in the deal as well... What a knee-jerk trade that was.

I've always wondered this, as well. For the #3 overall pick in the draft a few years back, you'd think you might be able to get a better return than Eric Belanger and Tim Gleason. A third-liner and a third-pairing defenseman? Huh? I know Rutherford's a good GM, so that's why the trade is confusing. I'm sure there's something I'm missing. Did Johnson specifically say he didn't want to play for Carolina, or did the Canes just get impatient because he wanted to stay at Michigan before signing a pro contract? Were the Canes in danger of Johnson re-entering the draft and thus essentially wasting their #3 overall pick from the year before?

It was a life long dream for JMFJ to play for Michigan, he wasn't ready to give that up after 1 year.

I think Carolina was just impatient and felt like they needed to defend their title. In their eyes, Gleason was a bit better than a 3rd pairing defenseman. Gleason just recently turned 24, and can give you 20+ minutes a night. But of course I don't think anybody would argue that they would take Gleason straight up for JJ.

The other component of the deal was dropping the remaining 2 years and 5 million of Oleg Tverdovsky's contract. It's hard to put a value on that, but in a salary cap world.....freeing up 2.5 million can be a big deal.

And I think JJ and Carolina management had a bit of animosity growing. Apparently they called him on numerous occasions to turn pro last year but he got annoyed to the point where he was basically "Don't call me, I'll call you."

I'd expect him to sign with the Kings eventually. I guess he enjoys the college environment. Some guys would just rather be a 20 year old star college hockey player than a 20 year old rookie NHLer.

I'm not sure I ever saw it in a mainstream news article, but there was an ESPN behind the scenes thing where the Blue Jackets were interviewing Kessel prior to the draft.

GM Doug MacLean and another member of their scouting staff were firing some tough questions, basically seeing how Kessel reacted. One went something like "You seem to have a bad reputation. Jack Johnson called you a dirtbag. What do you have to say to defend yourself?"

Edit:

Here's an excerpt:

Quote:

Kessel walks into the room. The Blue Jackets are the first of 20 interviews on his schedule. He is barely in his seat before Boyd says, "Teammates."

Silence.

"Do you know what I'm talking about?"

"No," Kessel says.

He most certainly does. Kessel has a reputation for being disliked by teammates wherever he's played. Jack Johnson, 2nd overall in last year's draft, called him "a dirtbag" during one of his combine interviews.

Kessel answers he doesn’t have a problem with his teammates. More silence. Then he says “I don’t have a problem with Jack Johnson.” More silence. “I had lunch with him practically every day.”
