Habs' Quintal suspended for one game

Canadian Press
12/7/2003
NEW YORK (CP) - Montreal Canadiens defenceman Stephane Quintal has been suspended without pay for one game after being assessed a match penalty, the NHL ruled Sunday.

Quintal was assessed the penalty during Saturday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes when he got into a fight with Carolina's Bob Boughner at the end of regulation and tried to kick Boughner from behind while both players were being restrained by the linesmen.

Quintal will forfeit $10,370.37 US under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement . The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Quintal will miss Monday's game against Philadelphia and will be eligible to return Dec. 10 versus the New York Rangers.

no big deal, Komisarek can use the time on defense anyway.

"It is unfortunate that Stephane will not be available for the game against the Flyers tomorrow,'' Habs GM Bob Gainey said.

My opinion differs.

"His play has been strong lately. He is a physical defenceman and the Flyers are a strong opponent, but I do accept the decision of the NHL.''

My opinion still differs.

Well the one positive out of this is Komi will get to play on D, don't like the fact that they had him on forward.

yeah, this is a plus for Komo
forward is not for him, or Rivet or any other D(maybe Bouillon)

these guys have been playing D most of their lives probably and CJ just throws them at forward for the hell of it, enough of that

they need to develop Komo, playing 5 mins at forward ain't helping
Quintal might have deserved a game, but Boughner did not want to fight him Friday, so Q wasn't in a good mood Sat.

very bad news. we really need him against philly. i really want to win this game, and now we go in minus one of our toughest d... - the league should suspend those refs from saturday night instead.

No offence dude, but I'll take what Gainey said to more of importance than the 2 cents added by a 'net jockey...LOL

Anyhoo, I think Quintal deserved what he got, I saw the distinct kicking motion...But, I am no way being negative about what he did...Boughner deserved it. I think Hill deserved it a little more, but.

We need more of this rough stuff. We need other teams to start having at least a little bit of fear when they go up against the Habs.

I firgured Quintal was going to pay for that action. Oh well. Komisarek will get the start and hopefully have a good game.

Komi will get the playing time on defense(where he belongs) And Q is really slow and is constantly getting beat. So the trade off is a good one.

Q stood up for his team and didn't take the abuse thrown his way and his team's way from a frustrated Canes team. Although I don't condone the kick attempt (do we get one point for the missed kick like the CFL?), at least he didn't walk away from the challenge. He wears his heart on his sleeve and good to see Bo right there standing up for him, just like Q did for his teammates on Saturday.

On the flipside, good to see Komo in action behind the blueline again. His size makes him a good replacement against a huge Philly team.
