NEW YORK (CP) - Montreal Canadiens defenceman Stephane Quintal has been suspended without pay for one game after being assessed a match penalty, the NHL ruled Sunday.
Quintal was assessed the penalty during Saturday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes when he got into a fight with Carolina's Bob Boughner at the end of regulation and tried to kick Boughner from behind while both players were being restrained by the linesmen.
Quintal will forfeit $10,370.37 US under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement . The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
Quintal will miss Monday's game against Philadelphia and will be eligible to return Dec. 10 versus the New York Rangers.
Q stood up for his team and didn't take the abuse thrown his way and his team's way from a frustrated Canes team. Although I don't condone the kick attempt (do we get one point for the missed kick like the CFL?), at least he didn't walk away from the challenge. He wears his heart on his sleeve and good to see Bo right there standing up for him, just like Q did for his teammates on Saturday.
On the flipside, good to see Komo in action behind the blueline again. His size makes him a good replacement against a huge Philly team.
