Avery knew exactly what he was doing: it was absolutely deliberate, and not only did he make initial contact, but followed through halfway to the goal line. That's a penalty regardless of who's in net and who's backing up. That amount of intent is going to be whistled 10 out of 10 times.

I like the hit from Ward, but he's lucky he didn't get roughing or charging there. You don't ever want to call things that are going to eliminate the emotion and intensity from the game, but those headshots are starting to become a no-no.
