I know he has been downright horrible in Montreal, but he might be useful to Florida. Give him a change of scenery and put him on the 2nd line as a speedy winger?
He'd be an expensive risk (3.75M next season), but at age 28 he might be high reward as well.
I agree. He's fast and skilled and could also help on the shootouts (0-10 guys!), and at his age could still be really good for years to come. I think Montreal would love to have a guy like Roberts for their playoff run too.
I don't think you'll see Martin adding to the team at this time. He will be looking to add prospects and draft picks at the deadline, ridding himself of impending free agents and then begin serious shopping around the draft.
I'd take a gamble on him. Pretty hard for an acquisition like him to NOT raise the talent level in Florida, when there doesn't seem to be much at the moment.
What's Kolnik adding to this team lately, for instance?
But these are the Panthers.
I don't want Samsonov to be next years "big acquisition", at $3.5M per.
Besides, if Samsonov is worth $3.5M what is Horton worth. I don't mind overpaying an UFA somewhat, but we don't need any more talented guys who don't play up to their potential. We have a VERY bad history with those.
With his salary being 3.5ish million next year there is no way you guys should really want him on your team. Save the money and put it towards some UFA's next year instead.
I can't think of any teams that would really want him, unless it was some team on the bubble of making the playoffs and they really really want the playoff revenue and can slot Samsanov into their top 2 lines.
Samsonov is a nice player, he can skate, stickhandle, and be creative
but he's not a dynamic threat like Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, or Crosby. He's not worth 3.5 million unless the Panthers have TONS of cap space.
...a Mtl fan here, breaks my heart to say it, don't waste your money. Be patient and spend the 3.5 million on a free agent this summer. I think you will be further ahead. I'm as blown away as anyone, I thought Samsonov would excel with the way the league is now. I could be wrong of course, and would be most appreciative if the Panthers removed him from the Habs salary cap to prove it
