I think getting Avery was a good move though I;m not too happy they gave up Cliche in the deal. But if Avery energizes this team and we get going maybe Sather will then make the move to get the 2nd line center we have been desperate for. I think Sather is waiting to see how this deal plays out before he officially decides whether the Rangers will stay buyers or become sellers at the deadline.
And I'm not too sold on Smolinski. Rather go and look into Jokinen first then go from there to maybe Brendan Morrison though I dont like him too much either. I think Forsberg would be the next best move after Jokinen.
Personally I don't see Avery as the answer to the second line, I could however see him as a third line center.
I think the Rangers might be not be interested in paying certain prices for a center right now so in the meantime Cullen stays on the second line and Avery centers the third. At least that's what I'd do.

The mention of that line just reminded me of the days of Brian Trottier. They were losing to the Blue Jackets with literally 3 seconds left with the puck at center ice. He sends MaCarthy, Oliwa, and Mckenna out for the faceoff. As expected, right off of the faceoff they start a fight with the whole Blue Jackets team. They all got fined and suspended. Ahh those were the days. When it was more fun to watch the Rangers lose.
I think they could move him. His contract isn't that bad and if a team wants him for what he actually is (a third line player) I don't see it being a problem.

Well, if they can indeed move him, the Rangers probably would be better off moving him. Use his spot on the third line for one of the kids that would be ready next year. It's not like this team will be anymore ready to compete next year then they were this year.

The real question will be if the Rangers can make a move for a young cornerstone forward.

The only problem is that Drury is almost certain to be overpaid, Nylander is probably going to ask for a raise, there is still no slow for Dawes to really fight for and I don't know if that leaves a lot of money to repair the defense.

I think he could, the thing with Avery is that he is more talented than a lot of people realize. They recognize him as being a pain in the ass (which he is) but this is a guy who wasn't a bum when it came to scoring at the junior or AHL level either and who is already a 15 goal, 40 point player.
Having said that, I think it's a bit of a long shot and asking him to be a good second line center (as opposed to passable) would really require ideally about 10 more goals and 20-25 more points than his current level.
I worry that we'd be right back into the same situation we got into with Cullen by hoping a legit third line center/forward suddenly becomes a second line player.
Ironically though, the two of them might make a nice third line (Cullen more of a finisher, Avery a playmaker).
The key for Avery will be maturing as a person and a player. I don't think his situation is all that different than Barnaby was in Buffalo. I think we saw a more mature Barnaby so that doesn't ring a bell for us, but the situations are pretty similar.
If Avery can grow at 26/27, the Rangers will have made a very good deal. If he doesn't than it'll be a disaster waiting to happen. But this is a move that is about more than this year.
