Samsonov And Rivet For Horcoff?

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Pat Hickey reports the latest rumour in Montreal is "Sergei Samsonov back to Edmonton along with Craig Rivet. In return, the Canadiens would get centre Shawn Horcoff." Hickey dismissed this, noting that "Oilers coach Craig MacTavish and general manager Kevin Lowe said this week they weren't interested in bringing Samsonov back. They said they were grateful for Samsonov's contributions late last season, but they passed on re-signing him last summer because they weren't willing to pay him anywhere near the $7 million the Canadiens gave him on a two-year deal."

Spector's Note: Hickey's assessment is bang-on. Sorry, Habs fans, but Samsonov ain't goin' anywhere this season. The Habs can buy him out in June, although that'll cost two-thirds the salary, so don't be surprised if "Sammy's" back in the roster again next season. Maybe he'll be like Radek Bonk and rebound from a bad first year in Montreal.

Besides that, this rumour is ridiculous... why would Edmonton do this?

WOW! Nobody told me that Milbury was the new Oilers GM.

Where do I sign?

Rumour has it that every team is trading every player somewhere before the deadline.

I can't wait for the deadline to come and go.

I believe Edmonton would be interested in Rivet. Think Bob could get Marc-Antoine Pouliot or Jean-Francois Jacques

I just wonder how any journalist can even bother to print such dreck, even if they ultimately cop out and say it doesn't make sense? "The latest rumour in Montreal"... well, that's anybody for anything, anytime, given the volume of random gibberish that can be generated.

And in advance... Oilers fans, please relax... no actual Habs fan has proposed this or subscribes to it in any way, so just roll your eyes along WITH us, not at us, SVP.

Makes no sense at all. Samsonov back to Edmonton ? Let me laugh. Why would they pay him 3.5 million for the last year of his contract. They already have similar players in their line up like Sykora & Hemsky.

Horcoff is not the answer for the Habs too. I am sick of these middle class centermen. Good one year, bad the next, and so on... The habs must try to obtain a real star player.

IT'S OFFICIAL:

We have become the Toronto Maple Leafs on the rumor front this year for some reason, every player available or being mentioned as potential trade bait is linked to coming to Montreal! When did this happen??? Why did this happen???

Toronto fans must be p!ssed off, every UFA or player to be traded wants to go there...don't they???

I'd jump on Rivet for Jacques straght up..man this guy can hit , fight and score goals (at least he could in the juniors)...

Junior is way different than the NHL, even the AHL.

Jacques might become or not a sound fourth line winger. No more.

I doubt the Oilers would want Rivet. They're seeking a puck-moving defenseman and Rivet does not fit the bill.

Horcoff could definitely be a decent player for Montreal but I doubt we'd be willing to part with what they'd ask for in return.

I would love that deal.

But I'm not a fan of trading Rivet if we're still in the running. You can never have too much depth on D for the playoffs, ask Buffalo.

Yeah I know that..but still I can't help but imagine that all the talent he had in the junior hasn't disappeared completely.. I mean he had an eye for the net..that can't be all gone even though I know it is a big step between juinors and pros.

I'm skeptical about it. The Oilers had the opportunity to re-sign Samsonov but passed. Why should they give up one of their best players now?

No way the Oilers would do this. I can't see them getting Samsonov after they chose not to sign him AND the fact that he's having a horrible season.

If Montreal trades Sammy could they agreed to pay part of his contract for next season? Don't know if that's changed now that there's a salary cap and some new rules.

If he's bought out at the end of the year that's about 2.3 mil against the cap for next season. If MTL agrees to pay, say, 1.5 of his contract next season, it'd save some cap space and more teams might be interested. Imagine Sammy at 2 mil would draw more interest than him at 3.5 mil.
