Mike Vernon's Retirement Ceremony

It was nice. Longer than I expected, but nice. Good to see him get the respect he deserves for what he accomplished as a Flame.

Now I await to hopefully see Joe Nieuwendyk and Al MacInnis' numbers up there someday.

I think it was a very well done ceremony. The ovation for Fleury over anyone else indicates who the fans think should be retired next..

The only thing I was dissapointed about was that they didn't use the same kind of banner as the rest, IMO it should have looked just like Lanny's. But other than that, I liked it. It was definitely good to see the '89 crowd up there too.

Although Mike Vernon was a Red Wing at the time, this is one of the moments in his career that sticks out to me.

I was there, flew out just to see it, and my luck, I got stuck beside a Blackhawk fan with an airhorn....Kind of a let down, but the ceremony was good, seeing the old highlights was awesome

Haha brutal. I bet that airhorn was going off like crazy in the last 2 minutes of the game.

they havent allowed many people to wear those numbers... and when Conroy was asked about taking 24 he was told his choices were 24 or 30something... to me that says Nieuwy's number is not going to be worn... and MacInnis' hasnt been worn since he retired either... and 14 has only been worn once (i think) since he left the flames

last player to wear #2 was Commodore in 03-04.

Hopefully Al Mac and Theo are the next 2 to be retired.

Was the Stanley Cup involved in the retirement at all?

Cup was just on display on the ice. I didn't like it when the NYR had the Cup out there for Messier's jersey ceremony and I don't like it with Vernon's. I mean he won one Cup there. One.

That being said, Mike's story is an awesome one. Calgary kid, played junior in Calgary and was a pro in Calgary. Mike's speech was powerful and did a great job in not only receiving his honor, but honoring the City of Calgary.

Rumour has it Niewy carried the Cup out onto the ice over his head.. Don't want to rain on Vernon's evening, but if that is true, someone needs to get fired. You just don't do that.

He carried the cup out, but not over his head.

Does anyone know why Vernon stuck to #29 when he returned to Calgary in the late 90's instead of going back to #30? No other roster player had #30 at the time.

I didn't like it either, but not because he only won one with Calgary, but just because I think it's corny. But regardless, Mike Vernon was very deserving of this honour.

I'm not sure why, familiarity maybe. But I remember that McLennan in his first season here wore 33 because he thought that Vernon had always worn 29 so he didn't want to wear it. After somebody told him that Mike wore 30 in the glory days, he promptly switched to 29.
