I admire their gutty play to this point but the Injury Bug has ravaged that team, I just dont see their play staying at the level it is at now all year.

Who would your top 8 be? Who would they knock out?

I dont know even want to venture a guess at the standings but I dont think San Jose will be able to keep this up. I would knock San Jose out

A St. Louis vs Vancouver Western Conference Finals would be pretty exciting and entertaining, but the winner of that round would be pretty bruised up for the Stanley Cup Finals :p

No kidding, why name the thread "top 8 at the Quarter poll" if you can't use the top 8?

Calgary (30 points) in 6th place with games still in-hand and LA leading the pacific with 30 points.

Well obviously, it's only going to get better once they get their players back from injuries.

Quite possibly I worded it badly. I just remember how we had threads at the beginning of the year making predictions, I just thought it would be fun if everone could redo them at the quarter mark. If you think the top 8 will change you can remake predictions now. Its all in fun.

I'll give the West a shot.

1. Vancouver
2. Detroit
3. Anaheim
4. St. Louis
5. Colorado
6. Los Angeles
7. Dallas
8. Nashville

Nashville shocks Vancouver in 7
Detroit takes Dallas out in 6
Anaheim eliminates LA in 6
St. Louis beats Colorado in 7

Detroit beats Nashville in 7
St. Louis beats Anaheim in 7

Detroit beats St. Louis in 5

I think 1 though 8, this season will be one of the closest in history. There are so many good teams.. I think Vancouver will have a great regular season again but I see Nashville riding Vokoun past Vancouver. Hedberg replaces Cloutier but it's too late. Detroit has been playing awesome lately and I think this is the real Detroit team, not the one that started the season. The Pacific division is a toss up but I think Anaheim is going to pull their crap together and will take the 3rd seed even though they'll have less points than St. Louis and Colorado. Dallas is going to have a rough go of it all season but they'll do enough to finish in the top 8.

i'm not so sure about that. san jose has really gotten it together (granted with a weak schedule lately) but they're playing better. i think they're a good candidate to sneak into the playoffs in the final week.

i'm guessing...

1. st. louis
2. detroit
3. los angeles
4. vancouver
5. colorado
6. nashville
7. anaheim
8. san jose

st. louis demolishes san jose 4-1, but props to san jose for winning one at home and winning the last spot with game number 82.
no repeat of last year as detroit handles anaheim 4-2.
los angeles and nashville battle hard, trade games until los angeles comes away, not unscathed, 4-3.
vancouver and colorado have a goal-scoring orgy that averages six per game. vancouver takes it in six.

vancouver kills st. louis in 5, totally dominates as bertuzzi and naslund play their best hockey ever.
los angeles repeats thier last playoff against detroit and takes it in six, but loses key players to injury (naturally).

depleted kings are no match for a red-hot vancouver team that cruises to the sc finals in six.

just realized that i have the favorite winning every series in the first round. i guess you can garuantee that i'm wrong then.

It is very interesting to see that even though the flames are doing very well right now (4 pts back from van and col with 2 and 1 games in hand respectively) the majority of people so far still see them missing the playoffs...Surprising to say the least...

I wouldn't worry about it, your first round matchups couldn't happen because of the way the divisions are set.

Here's Mine:

1. St. Lou
2. Colorado
3. LA
4. Det
5. Vancouver
6. Nashville
7. San Jose
8. don't want to say, hopefully Calgary

1. Philly
2. TBay
3. Ott
4. Tor
5. Bos
6. NJ
7. Atlanta
8. NYR

Round 1:
Stl over whoever (Osgood dominates)
Colorado over SJ (Kariya & Sakic take over)
Nashville over LA (Hartnell MVP, LA decimated by injuries)
Van over Det (Cloutier stands on head)

NYR over Philly (series turns into shootout, Hitch goes nuts)
TBay over Atl (Bulin stands tall)
Ott over NJ (Brodeur gets injured, people finally realize how important he is)
Bos over Tor (PF battle, don't know how Bos wins, I hate TO)

Round 2:
St. Lou over Nashville (hitting battle, ala TO/NYI)
Van over Colorado (Cloutier steals it again, Bertuzzi steps up)

NYR over TBay (again a shootout series, Rangers guns dominate)
Ott over Boston (boring as hell series, Ott wins with team defense)

Round 3:
Van over St Lou (because I am a homer, St Lou injuries from Nash)
NYR over Ott (NYR's stars continue to step up, new Simon-Lindros-Carter line especially)

SCF:
Van over NYR (shootout where Cloutier again steals the show)

yep, I'm a homer I know.

WHEN Calgary makes the playoffs, they will definently be a team that will upset one of the top seeds. I expect big things from this Sutter club

Not suprising at all. The Flames never get respect on HF, they could be 20 points ahead of the nearest team for the Western Conference title at the 3 quarters mark and 90% of the posters here would still have them missing the post-season. That's alright though, that's the way I like it!

Tell me what they've done over the last 8 years that warrant respect?

I was going to post my opinions on this but the start thread is so far off base that it threw me back a bit. Anyone who sees Anahiem as anything other than a team struggling to keep its head above water at this point is too focused on last year and not enough on this one. I don't see them showing any real signs *yet* of doing anything that makes me think that they have a shot at even sneaking into the playoffs let alone doing anything once they are there.

Calgary just continues to roll with lesser talent and a team game and bully for them for doing so. Great team play and they are suprising people all over.

Los Angeles is at the top of their heap *without* Alllison and Deadmarsh. That's it. Those two players, key players for certain, but two players are all that is missing from thier key group and yet, they are where they are. Allison is making solid strides to coming back and the team just landed Straka. So, would they be better if Deadmarsh came back? Sure. Is he the single piece of the puzzle that will hold them back from battling to finish strong? Not bloody likely.

The thing to me is this, there are teams that are placed on the list that are only there because of what they have *done* in the last year and not what they are doing this one. You have to take this one into account when you are making a thread that is based on this years third of the season mark in my opinion.

Other than that I like what you said and generally agree with you c carp, just not this time mate.

fair point.
I think Flames fans have to realize that. At the same time that doesn't stop Nashville from making several people's lists. Nothing against Nashville, they are a great young team, but it is curious that the Flames dont' register because they've stunk for 8 years, but that doesnt' apply to other clubs

regardless, I think Flames fans are optimistic that with a real coach (as opposed to Gilbert and Hay) things can be different this year...we'll see how they weather this next flurry of games sans Reinprecht,Conroy,Lydman,Turek and Betts
