Btw, I haven´t found any articles yet from the pressconference that was held... Why have media determined to ignore us hockeyfans??
You are absolutely right about the medias pessimism. If the media can't write anything bad about hockey, then they don't write at all. In a way I understand why Hardy doesn't listen to the medias criticism. But he could at least listen to us!

Can we come back to the the topic here guys?

What players are you guys disgusted to see on the roster?

Is there anyone that you can't understand why he isn't there?

I have heard a credible source say that one player was not included because Bendelin disliked his attitude during a warmup session. Have anyone else heard this and if yes, who's the player?

Well I thought for sure that some SSK-player would be on the team, Berggren or Hagelin.

I'm afraid we will be relegated. I don't know if this team can beat anyone. They should beat Austria and Ukraine but will they? Let's face it: Steen is not superhuman, even Johan Davidsson was in Tre kronor at his age. Who else has made an impact in senior hockey? I don't know. Anyone?

Salomonsson? Eckerblom? Give me a break.

Am I being too pessimistic? No, I don't think so. I think there is a tendency to overestimate the abilities of Swedish players by fans in Sweden.

Also, this age group sucks big time as their poor show at the U18s proved and quite frankly a top 6 position would be a bonus.

I would have liked to see thw two other players from NA in the roster.

Marcus Paulsson, Saskatoon
Jonas Johansson, Kamloops

Other players that I think could have been a part of the roster for different reasons:

Carl Söderberg, MIF Redhawks
Linus Videll, Södertälje (we could use some size)
Johan Berggren, Södertälje

I tend to agree with you - the only two junior players that really get attention in the Swedish media are Steen and Nilsson, and I personally think that it's got atleast as much to do with their last names as with their skills as hockey players. I don't want to bash either player, they're obviously very talented young players, but had they emerged ten years ago when Swedish junior hockey was very competitive, they wouldn't have been as highly touted. As you say; Davidsson was a national team player at the age of 19 and however talented he may be, he's no NHL calibre player.

This doesn't mean that Steen won't evolve into an NHL calibre player, but if you ask me, the Swedish players born in the mid-80's don't include nearly as many good prospects as their slightly older countrymen. Just look at the players born in 1980, we had the Sedin's, Zetterberg, Christian Berglund and Mattias Weinhandl, all of these (with the possible exception of Berglund) were better prospects than Steen/Nilsson IMHO.

The Swedish hockey teams (with a few exceptions) have horrible financial problems, yet they seem less inclined than ever before to give their own juniors a chance (the only teams who do are teams who can't afford to stack their squads with foreign players). Ideally I'd like to see a system where the teams were obliged to use a certain number of U-21 players in their squads. The Scottish football league has had a system for the last two seasons where the teams are obliged to use atleast three U-21 players in their squads for league games. So far it's too early to tell whether the scottish system will translate into better young players or not, but it certainly can't make the situation any worse. Something has to be done soon if Swedish hockey wants to continue to be a force to be reckoned with, otherwise we'll soon find countries like Switzerland and Germany outperforming us on merit.

I very much agree with you on this. We need some changes in the league, there are to many non-swedish players in the SEL and not enough juniors. Beeing a FBK-fan I'm dissapointed in the way they have chosen to deal with thier juniors. I think it's okey for the players who gets a shot in Bofors, but playing in Skåre instead of the U-20 league doesn't seem like a good solution. For example it's impossible to track stats for the players in Skåre.

IMO we need a rules for the SEL teams to have a U-20 team as well, a maximum of 3-5 foreigners and 2-3 young players in every roster.

Teams talk a lot of trash about being afraid of relegation and all that. They don't seem to remember that it was only about 5 years ago we hade mid-season relegation. Back then juniors still made into the SEL so I don't buy the crap about a closed league.

I would love to se a limit of foreigners in the league but with Bosman I think it's impossible. I'm not sure it's a good idea to force teams to dress juniors as they would probably be on the bench anyway. It could work if we reduce the number of players a team can dress. I would like it to be a maximum of 20 but preferably 18.....

The Swedish Hockey Association can't limit the number of foreigners anymore because EC-Laws dictate that it's discrimination against citizens of other EU countries to do so (they equate it to for instance limiting the number of coloured players a team can have). The only thing that's possible to limit is the number of foreigners from non-EFTA countries (I believe the limit currently is three non-EFTA players per game).

Well, that doesn't stop SM-liiga from limiting the number of foreigners (which was yesterday decreased from five to four for the 2004-05 season). It's illegal, but as long as all the clubs are behind it, it works. I don't know how it works in Sweden but in Finland the league is a separate organisation and the federation takes care of the lower &junior leagues etc.
