Billy Smith was pretty chippy and I enjoyed watching him hacking guys down. But Mike Vernon gets my vote based on his proclivity to spear people.

Hextall no doubt !!! I think it was the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals vs. Edmonton. Someone from Edmonton (Esa Tikkanen maybe?) was coming in on a 2 on 1 on Hextall.

Hextall just said "screw this, i don't care if they score!" He skated out of the net, and gave the edmonton player a punch in the teeth with his blocker !

Hextall was possessed by Satan (not Miroslav, the REAL one !) i think !!??

Hextall easily, used his blocker more than he used his pads. Loose cannon with a short fuse.

Easily Billy Smith. Some of these guys like Hextall had bigger tempers, and would blow up every now and then. But Smith was *constantly* on edge, and harassing the forwards. He'd tape the knob of his stick several inches down from the top of the stick, so that when he butt ended you, it was all stick, and not padded tape hitting you in the face. I believe they changed the rule after that, forcing goalies to put it at the end.

Gerry Cheevers and Ken Dryden obviously

My all-time dirty goalie list:

1) Battlin Billy Smith
2) Ron "Hacksaw" Hextall
3) Tom Barrasso
4) Ed Belfour
5) Patrick Roy
6) Dom Hasek
8) Dan Cloutier
9) Garth Snow
10) Jason Voorhees

Ron Hextall - what an animal.

I have some classic footage on tapes with him just beating the crap out of other goalies in fights..

I remember in 1996 or 1997 he fought someone, that was a classic, blood everywhere...Hextall skating down the ice at full speed is just awesome

He definitely had a wild temper too, as someone mentioned, he would snap on a whim.

God bless him though...he is still doing scouting for the Flyers.

The first name that popped into my head when I read this was Ed Belfour. He has a well-deserved reputation for having a nasty disposition...just ask Tomas Holmstrom....

Hextall and Smith are head and shoulders above anyone else mentioned in this thread. There's really no comparison.

Billy Smith 680gp 489pim
Ron Hextall 608gp 584pim

That's not even including the playoffs where Hextall was notorious for flipping out.

Good call on Barasso. Anyone remember him breaking Yanic Perault's arm a few years back?

How can there be an unauthorized AutoBio? He doesn't trust what he says? he thinks somebody else could recall his life better or more profoundly? What a load of crap.

He also tried to amputate Randy mckay's leg at the knee last year. In fact, belfour skated like 10 feet out of the crease to do it.

When I think of dirty goalies, I think Ron Hextall.

In terms of goalies just being whiny little pansies, I go for Belfour and Hasek. Hasek faked and embellished countless injuries, even attacked a reporter because he questioned his manhood, then attacks a plumber in a club game. And don't you guys ever forget Crazy Eddie bribing a cop a billion dollars??? lol....

Jason Voorhees: good one! Only #10?

I recall an end-of-game cheap shot of Hextall's on Chelios, where he tried to decapitate him with the business end of a goalie stick. Sickening to watch. For that alone, I give him the edge over Smith, who was no choir boy either.

Wasn't it Smith who made the NHL stop having teams switch sides before overtime? He'd hack the ice in the crease with the heel of his skate so when the opposing goaltender switched sides before overtime, he'd have trouble sliding across the crease because there would be holes and chips in the ice.

I don't know if Cloutier's dirty so much as he is feisty. What's he done that's dirty? (attacking Salo because he was helping a 2-on-1 fight against Clouts' teammate doesn't count )

Belfour is definitely one, as people have mentioned, the hacking and whacking he used to do is crazy, and he passed it on to Turco. Garth Snow really does stick out in my mind, because of his blocker.

wow, I wondered why teams didn't switch for overtime, I guess that would make sense.

I am only 17, so I don't remember vintage Billy Smith and Ron Hextall, but I've seen Belfour do some vicious stickwork. Especially that one low blow between Marty Lapointe's legs. That there puts Belfour #1 on my list.
