I am coming to Ottawa next Friday (visiting Mom).
I will be going to the 67s v Belleville game on Friday and the Senators vs Atlanta game on Saturday.
Maybe I will go back for the 67s again on Sunday.
Anyway, what is a good bar/pub pre and post 67s and Senators games...preferably in the Byward Market area. (I will be staying on York Street).
Looking forward to the Winterlude too (but mostly the hockey).
thanks and I hope to meet some of you at some point.
I'm doing some sports business symposium with some league executives (Bill Daly is the key note speaker) and they tossed second-bowl tickets my way. Hopefully they're good seats.
There aren't any sports bars in the market, unfortunately. Like has been said, your closest bet is Don Cherry's (corner of King Edward and Rideau, I think) or MacLaren's, which is on Elgin St. (it's probably a 15 minute walk from York St.)
If you're just looking for a bar/pub to go to after the game, just walk anywhere in the market -- there's probably a dozen or so within a kilometre radius of York St.
I guess it depends what you call a sports bar. There are plenty of places with a nicer atmosphere that would have whatever NHL game happens to be on playing in the background without volume. I assume the Heart and Crown is in that category, for example, as well as the Royal Oak and the Celtic Cross on Bank. There is also another Royal Oak on Bank in the Glebe, which is very close to the Civic Centre, where the 67's play. You may also just want to walk around the market and poke your head in a few places. Frankly, it's not that big of a place and the real pubs kind of stand out. If you really want sports, there's the Honest Lawyer on George St. in the heart of the market, which has a lot of TVs including one huge screen. There are also a variety of overpriced games (pool, bubble hockey, etc.) available. It's not my favourite place by any means, but you can't beat the short walk home. The other option is Local Heroes, which is probably the most hockey-oriented bar in town. Unfortunately, they tend to be a suburban thing and there aren't any within walking distance of the market. If you're willing to spring for a cab and watching hockey is the main reason you're going out, however, it may be for you. You're pretty much guaranteed to get a seat with a TV right in front of you and they'll play whatever game you ask them to play on the screen closest to you. There is one fairly close to the Civic Centre. I'd say your looking at about a $5 cab ride or a 20 minute walk to get there from the game and another $15-20 cab ride to get home. It's not really close to any other bars, however, so if you go there, you're pretty much going to have to stay there. Any of these options are better than Don Cherry's, if for no other reason than the fact that you don't have to give any money to Don Cherry.
Thanks everyone. Good suggestions. I don't know yet where I'll go but it will be somewhere.
Looking forward to the Senators game. My first in Ottawa. ( have seen them in NYC).
I hope to meet up with some of you. Do you get together before the games?
Anyhoo, have a good day. Keep well.
silvercup and i had an awesome day today! we skated the canal from km 0.0 to the 67's game, went to the game (skates and all, but we had boots to change into) and then skated the 4 km back after the game. it was awesome!!
