3 point games hurt though, thats why even a 3 or 4 point deficit in the standings is huge.

However if the Rangers continue to play this way (big if btw) i might have to retract my assertions that the season was over following the loss against the wings.

16-10-1 should get them barely in.

Just home from Wild-Hurricane game. Carolina played flat out lousy tonight and quickly got behind 4-1. They got a few good bounces to make a game of it but it wasn't because of a supreme effort on their part. I haven't seen them play much since Christmas and frankly I couldn't believe how flat they looked. If one didn't know better, there's just no way you would figure these guys were the defending champions. Great chance they will miss the playoffs completely.

...

From the start of the season I said that there are two teams in the top 8 that I don't feel will make it into the playoffs:

Montreal - a very average team that depends on two average goalies, an average offense and average D...they wont make it.

Carolina - this happens often, a defending champ not making it into the playoffs the next season...I see Carolina not playing inspired hockey and not making it.

Thus, I actually see the Rangers and the Islanders getting in! Another possible team that might not make it is Tampa...

I'm not giving up on the division yet either. The Devils have a very difficult March coming where most of their games will be on the road. That could be our opportunity to catch up to them, just like they did to us last March and some of April. It's not that plausible, but it's not impossible yet either. Still a decent amount of time left to make up 15 points. The only problem is playing well won't be good enough because we'll also need a big collapse from the Devs; like I said, it could happen in March, and they may even start to collapse next week when they finally hit the road after this nice home stretch they're having.

Lets just hope Broedur can shut out Tampa bay tonight, we can't afford three point games. Dare I say it, but: Come on Devils!

I still expect the Rangers to again be 6-7-8 points out on Friday morning

Montreal has 64 points and they play FLA and Jersey this week
Carolina has 63 points and they play LA and the Rangers this week
TB has 62 points and they play the Devils,Phoenix and WAS this week
TO has 61 points and they play NYI and Philly this week
NYI has 60 points and they play TO and Boston this week
NYRS have 59 points and they CAR this week

Carolina wins win both games for 67 points
TB wins 2 games-PHO and WAS for 66 points
Montreal win 1 game-FLA for 66 points
-----------------------------------------------
TO will both games for 65 points
NYI will win one game for 62 points
NYRS will lose to CAR for 59 points

Interesting thoughts
My Nostradamus prediction is like:
Montreal has 64 points and they play FLA and Jersey this week
Carolina has 63 points and they play LA and the Rangers this week
TB has 62 points and they play the Devils,Phoenix and WAS this week
TO has 61 points and they play NYI and Philly this week
NYI has 60 points and they play TO and Boston this week
NYRS have 59 points and they CAR this week

TB wins 2 games-PHO and WAS for 66 points (59 GP)
Montreal win 1 game-FLA for 66 points (59 GP)
Carolina wins one games for 65 points (60 GP)
-----------------------------------------------
TO will win both games for 65 points (58 GP)
NYI will win one game for 62 points (58 GP)
NYRS will win one gamefor 61 points (57 GP)

The Carolina game is HUGE
I could see Montreal finishing 9th or 10th before it is over. Dont ask why - just a feeling...

The Carolina game is big, because a win sets up a real opportunity for a 5 game winning streak before heading into the home and home with the Devils. Personally I think it's still too early to be doing any serious scoreboard watching. With 26 games remaining and being out only 3 points of a spot, this team still controls it's own destiny. There's still nearly a third of the season remaining. The recipe is simple...win as much as possible, and when they don't, make sure the losses don't come in regulation.

Agreed
But the Carolina game leads to an important series of games that precede the trade deadline.

Which may or may not be eventful for the Rangers part (center + defenseman that EVERYBODY is raving about - but we now have very few attractive assests that other teams would be find attractive or that we would be interested in parting in return for - imo at least).

If the Rangers play 5-2 hockey until then (which is highly possible) - they would need to go 11-8 the last 19 games to reach 91 points. Which is my current prediction to where an 8th slot would have to land to squeeze in - gathering the current "evenness" in the standings. This may however change...

Devils are way to far in our Division to catch up so I really want Devil's to win every game that they face a team in our Conference.

Yeah but the NHL trading deadline is 16 days and 6 games away.If these guys aren't moving up in the standings with the days coming off the calender and the games coming off the schedule, sell as many assets as possible and plan for next season

We should change the name of this thread everyday to reflect accordingly what the date is..

like and official scoreboard watch till we are in a playoff spot ( hopefully)

Today's scoreboard watching:

Tampa Bay @ NJ Devils..

NJ 1 - Tampa Bay 0

After 1.

Teams that are bolded, we should root against!

hopefully the devils win in regulation. can't have our closest rivals on the leaderboard getting points in losing efforts.
