Belanger Traded To Atlanta

http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/sha...ers_trade.html

It hasn't been announced, but according to the AJC, Atlanta is taking Belanger from NSH for Vishnevski.

Perhaps it was a three way deal all along.

Craig Custance is the AJC's new Thrashers writer, and he's doing a great job so far.

press release

For Release: Feb. 1, 2007

Thrashers Acquire Forward Eric Belanger from Nashville for Defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski;

Claim Forward Denis Hamel on Waivers from Ottawa

The Atlanta Thrashers have acquired forward Eric Belanger from the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.

Belanger, 29, earned 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in 56 games with Carolina this season before being traded to Nashville in exchange for Josef Vasicek on Feb. 9, 2007. The 6-0, 190-pound center won 53.6% of his face-offs (362-for-676) with the Hurricanes.

The native of Sherbrooke , Quebec , has collected 170 points (71 goals, 99 assists) and 183 penalty minutes in 379 NHL games with Los Angeles and Carolina . Belanger was acquired by the Hurricanes along with Tim Gleason from the Kings in exchange for Oleg Tverdovsky and Jack Johnson on Sept. 29, 2006, after setting career bests with 17 goals, five power-play tallies and 37 points with Los Angeles in 2005-06.

Belanger, who recorded at least 30 points for three consecutive NHL seasons from 2002-04 and 2005-06, set a career high with 20 assists in 2003-04 and matched it in 2005-06. He was originally selected by Los Angeles in the fourth round, 96th overall, in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

Hamel, 29, has registered seven points (four goals, three assists) in 43 games with the Senators this season. The 6-1, 200-pound right wing has posted a plus or even rating in 40 out of 43 games, and is plus four for the season.

The native of Lachute , Quebec , has earned 30 points (18 goals, 12 assists) and 77 penalty minutes in 182 NHL games with Buffalo and Ottawa . Hamel, who was selected by St. Louis in the sixth round, 153rd overall, in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, set career highs with eight goals and 11 assists with Buffalo in 2000-01.

Vishnevski, 26, registered 12 points (three goals, nine assists) and 31 penalty minutes in 52 games with the Thrashers this season. The 6-2, 200-pound defenseman has recorded 60 points (14 goals, 46 assists) and 434 penalty minutes in 468 NHL games with Anaheim and Atlanta . He was acquired by the Thrashers in exchange for forward Karl Stewart, a second-round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft on Aug. 17, 2007.

Great deal for the Thrashers, they add a good centerman with great playmaking skills and great skills off the draw.

Didn't see this one coming.... and I'm not quite sure I feel happy about this one.

I liked Vish. He has an up and down season for ATl, but I'm not sure why they are trading away a solid dman, when the team is closer to the playoffs than ever before. Maybe theres more to it? Eric Belanger? Sure he's had a decent few seasons with LA and with Carolina this one, but I'm not sure if that is acceptable return. The team has yet another, middle-ground forward. It isn't even that much of a cap savings either... and Vishnevski is younger...

They're both UFA's, so who knows if they'lll be sticking around for either team, but I would have kept a hold of Vishnevski that's for sure. Considering now the Thrashers talent on D is even thinner than before.....

Personally I wouldn't have made that deal, but then again.. I'm not a GM

EDIT: Well anyhow, since what's done is done, welcome to the Thrashers Mister Belanger! Lets hope you have some chemistry with our top 6 forwards.....especially Kovalchuk...

Don't understand why you guys made this deal.

Belanger can skate really fast, win faceoffs....and that's about it.

That means we're stuck with deVries!

One expiring contract for another one. Well the Thrashers officially have made their first rental trade for this season's playoff push. I am guessing that Rucchin's injury is worse than the team is letting on and DW and HiBob felt they had to make this move not feeling comfortable with either Slater or Kapanen playing with Kovy long term. I'll still hold out hope that deVries gets traded in a move for PP QB.

I don't really understand this move, the Thrashers doesn't have solids D-men and they trade one of their best. Maybe an other move is coming?

I imagine another move is coming but Vishnevski wasn't one of our best Dmen.

No, he wasn't one of our best.

After Havelid, they all look the same to me. (Except I think X is playing the best hockey of his life since coming back.)

Got rid of a d-man for a center. Can't complain. Glad we haven't given away the farm (yet).

Our PK has been terrible, Rucchin and Vigier are out, Holik has been so-so lately and Vish hasn't fit in at all. I think we had to make this deal.

The Thrashers are pretty deep on hard hitting defenseman.

Sutton and Exelby in the NHL, and that brute Valabik is on his way up through the system. Nowadays, you really can't have more than 2 or 3 of those types anyway.

Belanger is a decent addition, I hope this isn't the final roster move...and I doubt it is.

I am more interested to see if Carolina knew Belanger was coming here. You don't see many inter-division trades, and there is no love lost between either organization.

And it sounds like he was pretty unhappy there. His value may be in the three games left with Carolina.

Thinking about this now, at first I didnt like it, but I think Belanger could end up helping this team a lot. Belanger is good on faceoffs and I think he could also help our PK. He's had good seasons in the past, putting up 17 goals last season, while he won't reach that total this season, with some of the wingers we've got on our team, he certainly can pad his numbers. Hell, give him a shot with Kovy, see how he does, none of the other centers on this team have done anything there.

The whole Walker trade just got better for Nashville too, now it's essentially Vishnevski for Walker.

I'm just coming on here to say best wishes to Denis Hamel.

He has played very well for our farm team in Binghamton, but didnt see much ice with the big club where he's been most of the year.

There were interviews in the local papers today about how crushed he was to be going back to the minors as it was his dream to play in the NHL.

Treat him well. If you play Ottawa any time in the playoffs he may have a thing or two to prove.

As with Hossa, I wish him well, except when he is playing Ottawa.

If you're not sure who he is, think back to the beginning of the year. Remember the Sens player flying through the air after a hit from Dion Phaneuf?

That was Denis Hamel's big moment in the highlight reels.

I doubt Hamel will see much time with the big club. But, who knows.

So Atlanta basically traded Karl Stewart, a 2nd round pick and Vishnevski for Eric Belanger.

No, they traded Stewart and a 2nd for Vish
They traded Vish for Belanger
So it's Stewart and a 2nd for Belanger.

I give you two quarters for 50 pennies
Then I trade the fifty pennies for ten dimes.
So, I spent two quarters for ten dimes...

Belanger won't be with the team until the Edmonton game Sunday per the Thrashers' official Web Guy.

Eliminate the "and Vishnevski" and that's actually what they did, I think.
