Rangers Trends

USA Today: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/nhl0607.htm

If I'm reading this correctly, these ratings think the Rangers are a MUCH better team now than their points currently indicate. It has them finishing 5th in the East and 14th overall in the league (I'm looking at the Blue Predictor column). Thats probably just a little optimistic.

Hockey Rodent: http://hockeyrodent.com/rodent.htm1

Just as I said last night in the GDT I thought that Carolina would have to drop out as well as Montreal for the Rangers to have a good shot at the playoffs and Ro's berthMeter confirms that. Right now the Rangers have a 38.7% shot to make the playoffs, and the Hurricanes have dropped dramatically to a 46.1% shot to make the playoffs after last night's game.

On the right hand bar are the projected standings. Right now the Rangers are projected to be out of the playoffs at the end of the season by 2 points, which actually isn't as bad as it looks right now (many people in the media, except for Pierre LeBrun perhaps, have already counted the Rangers out of the playoffs).

Also, it looks like OTL points will have an adverse affect on the Rangers chances to make the playoffs. If it was based solely on wins, the Rangers would have it a lot easier.

What do you guys think of the Rangers playoffs chances based on some of these numbers?

It seems like last year, the Rangers played a lot more OT games, getting at least a point for their efforts. This year, they've blown some games in the third period and gone home without a point.

In the Rangers favor is that they are playing well now, have a lot of home games left(although have better record on road so far), and a lot of their competitors are struggling.

The percentages seem about right, but I would say the Rangers' chances are underestimated. Montreal, Carolina, Islanders, Toronto and Rangers should all be in 40-50% range.

As long as they keep up their solid play, the fans at MSG shouldn't have a problem supporting them. Playing on home ice can be an advantage as long as the fans are on their side.

They need to start getting W's at home and have to avoid back to back consecutive regulation losses the rest of the way and they have a great shot.

They need to win at home. 500 hockey at MSG, has hurt them. They can turn it around these next few weeks, with a good home stand.
