Urban Legend: Oilers Hockey?

how many times have you read/heard this?

the Oilers are a "skating team".
the Oilers have a "skating style"
they play "Oilers hockey".
or variations.

aside from the illogic of the above.
(don't all teams skate. don't all teams have a skating style. don't all play hockey. or at least try)
seems to me.
that the Oil are not the fastest anymore.
maybe way back when:
farah fawcett was hot.
big hair was hip.
mess was moosing.
gretz was great.
but not in the new & trying to improve it's sissie image, nhl.

Nashville.
Ottawa.
Buffalo.

fast.
faster.
fastest?

so.
Oilers hockey?
truth or fiction?
fresh barn-yard reality or outdated urban myth?

"Oilers hockey" is pretty much the same as "Flames hockey" at this point. Both teams play decidedly different games than the two stereotypes that tend to classify them.

Who was it that described Rangers hockey as something along the lines of "we like our hockey like we like our women, fast and sloppy style?" that was awesome.

maybe you should actually watch them before you try to spout off nonsense, umm seems like last year they were one of the fastest if not the fastest teams in the league (and seems to me they still are one of the faster teams in the NHL still).Added to that they got the Oilers hockey moniker from in the late 90's when nearly every other team was trapping or clutch and grab not back in the day lik eyou say.

He's just upset because the oilers speed is one of the last things he can cling to... cause there certainly won't be any oilers "playoff" hopes this season *snicker*

True enough.

"Oilers hockey" was basically run-and-gun with a healthy dose of ego thrown into the mix, as the Oilers were hardly special in this regard.

Oilers hockey died a pitiful death last spring when Edmonton trapped their way to the finals - and good on em for it. They finally realized that Oilers hockey was leading to nothing but 8th/9th place finishes and first round exits. I was disapointed to see them finally adapt.

wow can you tell me exactly what leg do you have to stand on in any playoff argument ? Atleast when dealing with Calgary they have a cup banner and have done something in the playoffs what exactly has Vancouver done besides losing ?

You just left yourself wide-open to all Oiler fans who will take any possible opportunity to gloat about winning 5 Stanley Cups back in the day. Just thought I'd give you a heads up.

LOL its so funny how when your team sucks you sit back and daydream about past glories....edmonton has probably one of the best hockey histories ever ..but the bottomline is this year they will be sitting watching other teams play ......and wondering how "one of the deepest teams in the league" finish 9th that is FUNNY

nxt year if oilers make the playoffs and the nux or leafs (my teams!) dont then i'll be laughing at my self......but as of now...im laughing at all the edmonton fans who said vcr would finish like 10th and that their team would be great

I think people in the media resort to the term, "Oilers hockey" because the vast majority of them don't watch them play. I doubt MOST hockey writers in the East actually watch games in the West. Having to watch Western games forces them to change their lives, and I doubt that most of them actually do. The term "Oiler hockey" is a good substitute for any lack of information those writers may have.

I'm not dreaming about past glories. I'm spewing angry. The Oil are a joke right now... and tonight hurt, it really hurt.

Reality is this is not reallyKevin Lowe's, MacT's or any of the players faults. We aren't good enough and obviously the right deal's haven't been there for us to make.

It is taking us a while to get over the loss of Pronger. He killed us and sent us right back to where we were pre-lock out. It will take still a little while to fully recover from what that *** did not only to the team but to the city.

I strongly dislike Chris Pronger.
But man, can he play hockey.

Anyways, the Canucks suck, maybe not as bad as the Oil this year but they still suck. I'd rather the cup go to Florida or sumthin.

Back on topic...

Oilers hockey no longer exists.
It is extinct.
It's been gone for a while now.

The only myth that I think is still out there is the Oilers being a 'free-wheeling" team with no defensive system or structure. As far as speed, I think Edmonton has more collective team speed than Ottawa to be honest, but regardless...who cares if the Oilers arent the fastest team in the league anymore? When did they start handing out a trophy to the best skating team? Nashville, Buffalo and Ottawa have been fast teams for years...what have any of those teams won?

Oh yeah, well you're stupid!

Seriously, the Canucks don't suck. You know that, I know that, this whole board knows that. And for what it's worth, we wanted the cup to go to Carolina, so we're even.

And again, go ahead and tell me that you've won 5 Stanley Cups, I know.

I think "Oiler hockey" has simply become a term that means a fast, wide open, offensive style of hockey, which goes back to the dynasty days in Edmonton when they had the greatest offensive team ever assembled. The term doesn't actually refer to the style of hockey the Oilers play now. This year's edition of the Oilers is the most defensive they have ever been, and they haven't actually played true "Oilers hockey" for the past 10 years. Anyone who believes the Oilers still play that way probably doesn't stay up late enough to actually watch their games.
