Renney believes Rangers have what it takes to grab a playoff spot

Quote:
Only seven points separate sixth-place Tampa Bay from the 11th-place Rangers with Carolina, Montreal, the New York Islanders and Toronto sandwiched in between and seven and half weeks to go in the regular season. The Rangers, who play at Carolina on Thursday night, feel they're primed for a run.

"I do feel that way. It's not just yapping, it's the real deal," Rangers head coach Tom Renney said Wednesday. "I've seen the way we've played in the last two weeks. If we were in the playoffs and they were starting tomorrow, I would feel very, very good about playing anybody."

It might be more coincidence than fact but the Rangers seemed to have received a jolt after the acquisition of bad boy winger Sean Avery from Los Angeles on Feb. 5, going 2-0-1 and scoring 17 goals.

"Coming out of the all-star break I thought we played well," said Renney. "And then the injection of Sean's tenacity in our lineup and his hockey sense and ability to play the game, certainly hasn't hurt us at all

Last two weeks?Did Tom forget the brutal losses to Toronto,Tampa,Detroit and losing to the Devils in the shootout?

What is he going to say?

"I don't think we have what it takes to make the playoffs."

...

Renney just meant that we have started to play better after the All-Star break...so despite some losses there...we were improving. Now we are starting to peak.

I would have, at least he would have been honest. Id rather have a coach be honest, then someone who is too positive and not honest.

I think he was just trying to show some confidence in his team. They certainly arent out of the playoff race yet, and with the way they are playing, they could very well make it in, the next few weeks will tell the tale however.

I say the Rangers can only lose 10 more times the entire season. If they lose 5 in the next 10 its gonna be very difficult.

That means in the next 6 games they only can afford to lose about 2.

Carolina
Philly
Chicago
Devils
Devils
Columbus

They better beat the Hurricanes to start it off. That game is HUUUGE.

The schedule sets up well were they can make it, but teams above are gonna have to start falling out of it too...

What is he supposed to say? "Um, I don't know if we'll make the playoffs. We've been inconsistent all year, and its very crowded battling for the bottom playoff spots. I give us about a 30% chance. I'd bet on Tampa, Carolina and the Islanders making it ahead of us."

He's the freaking coach. Of course he's going to say he's confident. How would the players feel playing for a coach who says they can't make the playoffs?

I could care less what Renney thinks. I'm glad he's showing confidence in them but the important thing is that the TEAM is confident in their ability to make the playoffs. They are the ones out there doing the work every night...if they don't think they can do it, they won't do it. If they believe in themselves and play well every game down the stretch, they can make a strong push towards a playoff spot.

I doubt he would say that, but when things were going really bad he would say things like, "It's going to take a monumental effort, no question."

Hmm, I can see why he is so optimistic.
They better play well.

He has to say that...

And secondly, I think he's actually right... Ive seen a couple of wins plenty of times before but there is a feel to the last games we've seen.

I agree, they need to go at least 4-2 or 3-1-2 over the next 6. The Hurricanes game tomorrow is huge because a W would mean we don't have to sweep the Devils to have a successful outcome over these 6.

How do you know he's not being honest?

You gotta play 'em one game at a team. I'm just happy to be here and good lord willing, things'll work out.

Someone has been looking at Rodent's Berth-o-Meter .

"now we are starting to peak" 7 weeks out, is not a good time to peak. They need a good streak, like 10+ games, and save the peak for when they get in.

We'll have a better picture of things after the Cane's game.

yeah, its about as big a game as you can get, but i think, sadly, the rangers will be close enough that they MAY pull a move they may not have usually because theyll be within striking range.

im almost wondering if were not in all or nothing territory. theyll either have to play dominant hockey like they have been, or stink up the joint, and do one or the other for a nice long stretch before the trade deadline, its important to know if were in buy or sell mode, and the only way to really know is if we see consistent hockey.

I agree but I think consistency is the one thing you won't get. If true, the team will continue to hover in striking range and the management will do ... nothing. Too afraid to surrender the playoffs and acquire more futures. Too afraid to sell futures to guarantee a run.

Well what kind of a coach would he be if he said "I don't believe this team can make the playoffs." You also don't like the fact that Renney is being too positive?....I don't understand

To the press...

he has no options in what he should say - he has to be positive.

In the locker room, he needs to tell these guys that they're going to have to play harder and smarter down the stretch to even make the playoffs. No sugar coating here needed - he needs to be strong and let them know what it's going to take to get in. He needs to remind them of stretches of games in which they didn't play hard and smart and the result was being out of a playoff spot nearly 60 games into the season. Then point to recent games and other stretches and remind them what it took to get those wins.
