NHL goal judges: completely pointless yet?

I'm talking about the guys who sit behind the goal and turn the red light on. Countless times I've seen these guys not turn the light on when goals were scored and turn the light on when the puck never went in. With the whole review system now and place and the two referee system, is their job just for show at this point?

Yeah... considering that they take up at least 4 seats (2 on each end of the rink) and the prices teams charge for them I'm shocked the NHL hasn't gotten rid of them.

they are pretty useless. the nhl should give them something to do. Like at least have the refs turn around and look at them and PRETEND to ask their opinion.

ps- How do I get that job?

Awards:
They should have them sit up in the booth and be permanant goal judges... there really is no reason to have them on the ice. If they're going to say when a goal has been scored they should have a better reference frame than from behind the goal.

Who would turn on the pretty red light to let all the fans know a goal has been scored?

Considering they mess it up plenty, it would be just as easy for someone between the penalty boxes to do it.

I consider myself a traditionalist when it comes to hockey but I have to go along on this one. The stripes don't even glance at the goal judge anymore. I'm pretty sure technology exist that could light the lamp when the puck crosses the goal line. Lose 'em and sell 4 extra tickets.

I flew up to Detroit last week for the Coyotes game. I knew i had third row seats behind the net.

When I got there, i thought they were awesome seats

Then the game started

Luckily a few seats to our right were open so we were able to move down a couple seats, which made it a little bit better

I love seeing that red light when someone snipes one bar-n-in. Dont care if they are point less its part of the game.

Can anyone honestly say they dont like seeing that red streak when your favorite player goes forehand backhand bottle-n-out?

Exactly...not only are goal judges pretty much useless, but they obstruct a good amount of seats. I sat maybe 20 rows behind the goal for a game this season and between the goal judge blocking much of the goal and the black netting making it hard to see play at the other end of the ice, I would've rather been in the cheap seats in the upper corner of the arena.

All you need is a guy in a booth or room somewhere watching a couple of HDTV's that are focused solely on the goal (maybe two camera angles each) and a button he can push to light up a couple of red lights behind the goal.

Yeah, it's completely pointless to have a goal ref sitting behind the goal with the technology of today. As you've said, they also obstruct fans.
