Top 5 scorers 25 or under currently in the NHL

Who are the top 25 or under (age wise) scorers already in the NHL? I am talking about how good of a scorer they will be over their NHL careers, not who is the best right now.

So who are the top 5 guys in terms of career potential currently playing? Here are my top 5:

1. Ilya Kovalchuk - 20 years old and on pace for a 95 point season. When was the last time a 20 year old scored 90+ points? Absolutely incredible scorer and underrated playmaker.

2. Joe Thornton - Amazing playmaker, great vision, deadly shot. Hell of a center and already has one 100+ point year under his belt. If he were 20 instead of 24, I'd have ranked him 1st on this list.

3. Rick Nash - I can't believe this kid is 19. Tied for 1st in the NHL in goals scored, but only has 3 assists. I think he will start to accrue more assists as he matures and gets surrounded by better linemates.

4. Marian Hossa - Just so talented and fun to watch.

5. Alex Tanguay - Really coming into his own this year. Always had the potential, now starting to really deliver.

Yes, I know, Spezza isn't on my list. Not an oversight on my part. I just don't think Spezza will become a dominant scorer or playmaker. I see him as being a 60-70 point per year guy max.

You could easily add Lecavalier and Havlat to this list; although, I wouldn't argue with your top 5 ... well maybe Tanguay, but you can't argue with results, no matter how much I dislike the Avs .

Has everyone now decided that Dany Heatley will never play good again?

He can get 60 points this year if he gets hot down the stretch, and that is not out of reach since Hossa is on his line.

It is too hard to differentiate between the top 5-8 <25yrs players.

I think you should ask, "other than [then name the players here], who are the best scorers 25 years old or younger currently in the NHL?

You are right, Physical play and defense is an unknown ability at a young age and should be disregarded....note the sarcasm

No Tanguay? All he's doing is leading the leauge in assists and tied for the league lead in points. I certainly hope the leech tag still isn't on him.

And I'm sure Datsyuk and Iginla are either 25 or over.

Tanguay is currently ahead of all these players in terms of points right now on this list and you don't even mention him.

The post is for career potential, not current production . . .
No, Morrow shouldn't be included in a list that deals with potential point production . . .

My top 5:
1.Kovalchuk
2.Nash
3.Heatley
4.Thornton
5.Toss up between Hossa and Hejduk

Heatley would have been higher if his knee wasn't such an uncertainty . . . I have Thornton no higher than 4 because I don't see him as a high enough goal scorer . . . Hossa is probably higher than Hejduk, but I figured they were too close to call. After this group there are a bunch that will be similar . . . Havlat, Spezza, Lecavalier, Richards, Frolov, Hemsky, etc etc. In a year or two, I think Ovechkin and Crosby have the potential to bump into this top 5.

Everyone speeds on that road, take my word from it . . . I speak from experience. I'm not saying this makes it ok, and when I say everyone speeds on that road I certainly don't mean everyone goes over 80 . . . but then again, not everyone drives a Ferrari. It takes a certain amount of control and awareness to drive a car like that, and I'm not sure guys in their young 20s has that . . . I'm 23, and I get up to 70 easily in my Boxster without realizing it on one particular stretch of road everyday on my way to work.

I don't think St. Louis is 25 or under. I think he's like 27 or 28.
