GDT - February 17, 2007: Atlanta at Ottawa 3 PM EST

Thrashers vs. Senators
3:00 PM EST
CBC

Game Stories:
1. Which Thrashers team will we see? First half or second half?
2. Can Gerber stand up to Atlanta's firepower?
3. Hossa's back in Ottawa. (Same with Hamel)

Background:
-Senators have won three in a row
-Emery is serving game two of a three game suspension
-Thrashers have lost their last 3 games

Line-Ups:
Senators:
Heatley-Spezza-Neil
Schaefer-Fisher-Alfredsson
Vermette-Comrie-Kelly
Schubert-McAmmond-Eaves

Phillips-Volchenkov
Redden-Meszaros
Corvo-Priessing

Gerber
Guard

Thrashers:
TBA

Stat Leaders:
Senators:
Goals: Heatley - 32
Assists: Heatley - 39
Points: Heatley - 71
+/-: Preissing - +33
PIMs: Neil - 124

Thrashers:
Goals: Hossa - 33
Assists: Kozlov - 40
Points: Hossa - 72
+/-: Metropolit - +12
PIMs: de Vries - 60

Keys of the Game
Senators:
1. Effort, effort, effort
A consistent effort from the Senators means good things. Will it happen?
2. The PP
Will is be better than it has been?
3. Gerber needs to be good
He can be, but will he be?

Thrashers:
1.Pressure the Senators
Apart from Phillips-Volchenkov, the defense hasn't played exceptionally well.
2. Get Hossa and Kovalchuk going
As they go, so does the Thrashers.
3. Score first.
It's Gerber in net.

--

Misc. Notes:
1. It's my birthday.
2. The day before Chinese New Years. Say good-bye to the year of the dog, and say hello to the year of the pig.
3. Reading Week!

Big game IMO. We need to keep putting up points on the board to distance us from the pack below us that are fighting like mad for spots (look at MTL, sitting in 4th for months, now on the verge of dropping out of the top 8). Atlanta are a possible 1st round matchup for us, we need to beat them and shut down the likes of Hossa and Kovalchuk and get in their heads a bit.

GO GO!!!

Another big game with the standings so close. Pittsburgh beat the Devils earlier tonight putting them at 71 points. With a win tomorrow we can be tied with them at 71, though it probably won't last with the Pens taking on Washington on Sunday. That will finally getting rid of their last game in hand at least. It will put us 2 points ahead of the Thrashers though. Tampa Bay is 1 point behind us but they take on the Panthers tomorrow so they'll most likely be at 70 at the end of that one.

Let's go Sens. We can take the Thrashers with the way they're playing right now. Let's take advantage of it. Hold it together Gerber and the rest of the team will do their part.

Considering how BAAAAAAD the Gerber baby looked his last game vs. Atlanta, a bounce back game would be great. Sens will have to protect him and keep most of the shots to the outside like they did vs. Florida.

Interesting bit of fact regarding Atlanta's skid. Atlanta has lost 7 of its last 10 games.

Hossa has no goals, only 2 assists and is a collective -5 in those 7 losses.
In the 3 wins, Hossa has 3 goals, 4 assists and a collective +6.

So it seems that if the Sens can keep Hossa off the scoresheet, they have a good chance of winning.

Hossa's always been a streaky player.

If he gets hot, watch out.

Protect him yes, but I just don't want their whole game plan revolving around that. Hopefully they'll have enough confidence in him to bring some offensive production as well.

Thrashers are probably more desperate. We sure never have owned them. And the Sens arent in their game every 2 days rhythym. Sens getting points this aft would hafta be considered impressive.

I wonder how the matchups will work tonight.

Go Sens go.
