TPS Feb 19th: KP on Grebeshkov...

SO the Oilers are clearly sellers now (in my opinion) and as such I expect the next few weeks that there will be more youngsters coming into the organization. The first is Denis Grebeshkov. Want to know how he stacks up in the organiztion?

Kevin Prendergast will appear on TPS this Monday to give fans the low down on the new Russian blueliner. Will he be in Edmonton next year? Perhaps even sooner? We'll find out from the Oilers head scout.

Also on the show, tentatively scheduled is Kyle Brodziak...

This week's Focus on the Franchise centers on the Denver Pioneers. We'll have comments from Paul Stastny, Antti Laaksonen, Mark Rycroft, Geoff Paukovich and head coach George Gwozdecky. Also one other former NHL player in the mix that we hope to welcome on as a live guest as well.

Rob Vanstone will chime in to talk about how the NHL rule crackdown this year in the WHL has NOT had the desired and expected effect.

The Pipeline Show, 7-9 PM TEAM 1260
426-TEAM, 426-8326
pipeup@thepipelineshow.com OR pipeup@cfrn.com

Cheers!

KP has done a great job in the scouting department, but I'd take what he says with a grain of salt, because Mac-T will ultimately decide what this kid is going to do. Look at Mikhnov, great talent, who was shot down by Mac-T and his season went into the crapper. It sure would be great if both Grebeshkov and Mikhnov come over together next year and gives this teams aenemic offense a shot in the arm.

Good call, I think having another Russian on the team would help both of them (Ulanov could have been a positive for Mikhnov had he come over a year or (three) earlier)). And great work Guy, it's awesome to see you guys are all over bringing us news on our newest propsect ASAP. It's always appreciated!

I actually think, i think Cloned mentioned it and it was a good point, Greene better get his **** together or get ready to pack his bags, the Grebeskov is being broken in next season, along with Smid, no way in hell Greene is also being broken in, i think he either performs or gets shipped out for a more competent D-man (package ofcourse). I think Mikhnov could help next year, and could also make it easier on our Cap in regards to signing fowards for offence.

Hey Matts, am I mistaken, or weren't you a big fan of Grebeshkov??? Or did you just like him better than Bust-a-maki??? I could've swore that I remembered your name when I first heard about this trade.

That doesn't mean he has to be here next year. If the Oilers are further out of the Playoff race come next Tuesday, I would deal Smith to a contender who wants to add depth.

Heck, I would trade him even if the Oilers are heading to the Playoffs.

Why though? Can you give me 3 good reasons why we should trade Smith? Just 3 is all i ask.

1. He's slow

2. He can't make passes

3. With his salary gone, we could afford an upgrade on defence

Those aren't good enough reasons.

1) Because he is slow? You trade your captain because he is slow? When was he ever regarded for his amazing speed?

2) He can't make a pass? Is that his sole purpose on this team? To make spectacular passes?

3) Tjarnqvist will also be gone, use the loss of his salary to afford the defence upgrade.

If Buffalo would do Nathan Paetsch for Jason Smith I'd take it.

Buffalo has Lydman, Campbell, Spacek, Kalinin and Tallinder under contract for a few more years and could use Smith as a McKee replacement. Smith for Kalinin wouldn't be horrible either.

Hmm... if Mikhnov and Grebeshkov are over next season, I wonder if there's an assistant coaching role for Ulanov here as well?

Yeah. I have to give credit to LT though. Before he posted his comments about Greene on his blog, I thought I was the only one that thought Greene was still taking too many penalties, not holding the line properly, etc.

Seriously? or are you saying that tounge-n-cheek? What could Igor Ulanov of all people do for us as a team that Billy Moores, Charlie Huddy and Craig Simpson can't do? Maybe as a scout I could see that, if Ulanov wants to take on that role for us sure, he could really provide another set of eyes to scout some future european prospects. Definately another countryman for Grebeshkov would help, look at Malkin and Gonchar, hockey is a universal language obviously it helps though if you can communicate your message clearly, Gonchar is playing the translater for Malkin, but iv'e seen times were on the bench, Crosby would goto Malkin and show him a spot to be from a playbook they have, or where to go, and be like 'ill get you the puck there, you be around that area' of course grebeshkov n Mikhnov arent as skilled of players as Malkin and Gonchar, its gonna take some time for them to develop n try n ease that transition in training camp, if Kevin Lowe can hire Ulanov as our "official Russian translator" im sure he would do that lol.

That Bergeron-Greene combo has just been a disaster. I'm not sure if MacT has singled them both out and just let them play the weakest possible minutes together, or if Greene was being pulled down by Bergeron somewhat. If so, they may bring in Grebeshkov right away and see what him and Greene can do together. Give Greene another chance with a new D partner. If Greene still can't handle more than butter soft minutes, I think we may see him dealt in the offseason.

Grebeshkov can't come until next year.

Hmmm...you ask for 3 reasons, someone else gives those 3 reasons and you disagree? That's their opinion, how can you tell them they are wrong? Magnus can easily say you are wrong. Everyone is intitled to their own opinion, after all, this is a message board.

My Reasons:

1). Takes dumb penalty after dumb penalty at crucial moments of the game
2). He gives up the puck much more than a no.2-no.4 defenceman should
3). His market value will not get any higher from here on out.
