in the offseason
- Gomez inks a $5.1 mill / 5 year deal

still need a veteran top 2 D-man
Which of the seven is moved to make room?

I predict that if we lose Zubrus.....our deadline move will be us moving closer to the #1 pick in the draft and further away from the playoffs for another 2 years.

I doubt they're very active. Zubrus will give them the inkling that his demands will lessen, and they'll pass on the opportunity to move him.

Heward maybe goes for a low pick (7th?).

What if you package Zubrus and one of the younger defensemen and a pick for a player like Lupul (not Lupul persay, just someone like him)? I think that kind of trade actually makes the Caps much better and even closer to the playoffs.

Do we really want to deal two players from our weakest positions on the roster?

I would love Lupal, but Center and D are this team's achilles heel.

Zubrus really isn't a center (and the situation was a reaction to Zubrus NOT signing a new deal before Tuesday)......... and (in my mind) center is the biggest concern. Also, moving a young defenseman frees up a roster space for a vet guy. Caps need to do something with the logjam of defensemen (gosh, who ever would have thought that was possible) who are ready/need to play in the AHL next season. Hershey is full up and really can't take them all. Trading one of younger defensive prospects/players can take care of the log jam as well as obtaining a missing piece (in Lupal’s case ---- a player who can stand in the crease and score 30 goals).

It's a chain reaction ......... Caps need to know if Zubrus is signed. If not, they need to proceed as if he weren't coming back next season. If he does and they've traded/signed a center, so much the better as he can move to wing.

Edmonton is 8points out so a trade of youngsters could work.

I would trade almost whatever non-roster assets it took including this year's #1 + Suts + Eminger to get Lupul. Of course, I've been called Poile for suggesting that before.

I just love hearing the name: Joffrey... and that boy can play!

edit: obviously within reason. If our #1 this year were offered we may only need to add one of Suts or Emi. Or Suts+Emi+Flash

He's been asking about him since about 4 years ago. While the luster has worn off a bit he still has value. Especially to Lowe. While I would hate to lose him and all he brings (I'm with the group that likes him overall more than Gordon), I think the only way we can fill out this team is through trading some of our core at our psotions of strength.

I'm a big Sutherby fan too (I also like Gordon) ..... however, if losing Sutherby, Eminger, (or anyone NOT named Alex) means the team gets an honest-to-goodness NHL ready center (especially Lupul) or defenseman --- take the deal and run.

Caps have a bunch of defensive prospects, too many for the limited number of spots available between the NHL, AHL, and possibly South Carolina ..... that's why I think the team will move one to address the holes in the forward ranks.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the team moves one/two of the "back six" guys (Clymer, Sutherby, Bradley, etc.) as part of a deal.

Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if the team stands pat at the deadline and waits until the summer to make some deals (draft day anyone?).

Lupul is a RW. Nearly equal position of weakness.

He's played center ........ what I like best about his game is his willingness to go to the crease to score "junk goals" ......... it might cost Fehr to land him though.

More fuel...I think Eminger could develop into one hell of a player skating on Edmonton's ice surface 41 times a season.

And Eminger and Sutherby are very much like the Bopsie Twins ….. I think they’ve been joined at the hip since they joined the organization.

Someone a while ago brought up the idea of going after Brad Boyes from Boston. I wasn't high on the idea then, but he could be a very good replacement for Zubrus if we are going to trade him.

He is a center/rw with good 2-way potential. He is struggling to put up points this season but you got a think playing possibly with Ovechkin would get him back close to those 26 goals 43 assist #'s he put up his rookie year.

I wonder if Eminger would interest Boston?

Probably not, considering that they've got Mark Stuart & Matt Lashoff coming up soon. Boyes has upped his play recently (playing with Bochenski & Kessel) and I'm not convinced that the Bruins will be sellers.

As for Lupul, it sounds like he suffered another concussion against Detroit. I'd stay away from him at this point. I'd rather they went after a guy like Horcoff that can dish the puck and feed the Alexanders.

Horcoff isn't for sale

Neither is Lupul, most would say.

My point is: the Caps need more talented pass-first players than shoot-first types.

most would say Lupol is available. All i read/hear from the Oilers is that they would like to move Lupol as he is doing next to nothing for them.

Maybe from disgruntled fans but I haven't heard Kevin Lowe say anything to that effect recently. Considering he's injured again, it'll be hard to get back good value. I think of him as similar to Zherdev in that both have such high potential that it'd be hard for a GM to move them unless the deal is overwhelming.

, when have you ever heard a GM openly talk about trying to move any player? especially a young player who isn't a pending UFA.

Its not just the angry fans that are talking on this one, multiple trade rumor sources have been talking about this off and on for months.

...and we all know that trade rumors are of unimpeachable credibility.
