Oh, gee, the usual suspects strike again. Total confusion in their own zone? Check. Wrong players on in clutch situations? Check. Lack of effort and work ethic? Check. All of these are COACHING ERRORS AND DEFICIENCIES. Whose fault is this again?
I think everyone is grossly overreacting. Their road record is dismal and disconcerting but it's not the coach's fault. How is it Playfair's fault when they don't get the puck out of their zone, blow a defense assignment, or pass up good scoring opportunities for a stupid pass, or Kipper lets in a weak goal like in OT? Huselius could have easily had a hat trick last night if he'd have shot. Yet, miraculously, when they get back home they put it all together. Their problem is that their confidence on the road has been shattered, and the coach can only do so much. They need to work through this, I just never thought they'd still be struggling with it nearly into March.
That being said, Sutter's return to the bench would be a good thing. He'd put the fear of god into this team and the self-motivators and lazy players would surely right their ways. However, that'd send a bad message to anyone thinking of coaching this team with him around. Who'd want to take a job where your job is always looming over you, ready to take your position? If Sutter took the bench it'd have dire consequences, which I think is why it won't happen.
Let them work through it. Playfair won a championship in the ahl, spent several years as an assistant coach in Calgary. so he is as ready for the role as any rookie coach.
