Florida (23-26-12) still has playoff aspirations, but has to be considered a longshot at 13th in the East and nine points out of the final spot.

Seeking their fourth win in five games, the Panthers lost 3-2 in a shootout Tuesday at Tampa Bay and dropped to 1-12 in games decided after regulation.

Nathan Horton scored both goals for Florida, which was short-handed eight times.

"I thought we got a really big game out of Nathan Horton," coach Jacques Martin said. "We did a good job. I thought we had a strong effort. We took too many penalties."

The Panthers have only four goals on 26 shootout attempts this season.

"Penalty shots are not our specialty, I guess," forward Ville Peltonen said.

Center Jozef Stumpel, Florida's third-leading scorer with 42 points, returned to the lineup Tuesday after missing five games with a shoulder injury.

Florida has won two of three meetings with Pittsburgh this season and 14 of the last 16. The Panthers have taken eight of nine at home in the series since the start of the 2001-02 season.

Auld will have to be reevaluated for his injury and may require surgery. Bertuzzi practiced again, saying he plans to be back sometime before the 2010 season.

Should have had 2 points in TB. Lets get another big game tonight. Horton will keep his hot streak going tonight. Cats win 6-3.

I'm crossing my fingers for a 3-2 win. With Jokinen, Stumpel, and Van Ryn all playing injured (at least), I'm not going to hold my breath for explosive offense tonight. Work the defense to clamp down Crosby, Malkin, Staal, and all their other young superstars in the making.

That is the optimistic stance, he told me it would be more likely 2011. j/k

I say Horton stays on his hot streak and Rusty adds to the bottom line tonight.

We win this one.

Alright now, don't get too excited He hasn't said he won't be back at all this season. He will be back eventually, even if that means March. Maybe he can drive the zamboni or something, I don't know. But we should get something out of that $5+ million.

Also I'd like to know, why is he not on LTIR? We could be saving money on the books and make it even easier to make moves...and by that I also mean making moves any number of months ago. He was projected to be out until at least February for some time. If the Devils can do it, why not us?

No that honor goes to Montador, one of the only bad players on Tuesday night. But boy was he bad, so bad I want him out for a few games and Kiwi in.

And yes Van Ryn is playing hurt. I hope that once we're officially out of it, guys like Van Ryn and Jokinen will finally get the surgery they need. They are true warriors but it can only help so much. Also for a guy who's hurt, Jokinen isn't even doing that badly. Stumpel's playing hurt too, these guys are very committed and it's nice to see.

Stop picking on Montador. He is not on the roster for his defensive prowess. He is a shootout specialist. That is why we traded Huselius for him.

Sad, but true.

I'd rather see Kiwi out there for a spell.

Good one. But wait...his effectiveness on SO is still 50%. In fact it's kinda 100%, he did score on the rebound.

Aww, I can't help but like Monty.
He's not the best player of course, but he seems like a really nice guy.
I'm too soft, I admit it, but it's comforting to think the Cat's locker room has someone who is a natural antedote to what I see as the brooding pile of misery and negativity that is Todd Bertuzzi.

I can't help but be slightly irritated that Horton has managed to make he change my opinion of him entirely in the space of about three games.

I was all about pointing out how lazy and unconcerned he was when he lost the puck. How other players had to time their passes so he could pick the puck up without breaking his stride.
I had all my arguments in place for why they should just grant his wish and get rid of him in favour of someone with some heart and he goes and pulls the old switcheroo on me and looks like a man possessed out there.
Keep it up, Nate!

Between the injuries and trade rumors, it feels like the Panthers are on Survivor. I never know who to expect in the lineup.

I predict we'll come out with a 4-3 win tonight, but its going to take a huge effort from every guy on the ice and it won't be easy at all. Even though we're damn lucky to be facing Thibault, those young stars the Pens have will be playing their hearts out as usual. The defense just can't let Eddie stand on his head and we can't take stupid penalties like last game since their PP is 4th best in the league.
